The Tenerife Forum Gardening Thread - generally, but not always, serious!

I've got green plants in the garden, some with nasty spikes, some without.. some going brown, some not. I have no idea about watering or what they are called and no idea how to explain at a garden centre in Spanish , so it occurred to me other people on here just might know what they are doing with these sub-tropical plants.... so if there are enough people interested we could ask the moderators to create a new topic. Post pictures of plants & thier care.

Andy (not so green fingered)

Tenerife Gardening topic

Aquayle. Is organic gardening the subject of your avatar?

If your garden is er.....unlandscaped the 'spiky things' may well be euphorbias which grow all over the island with many varieties. But if the 'pointy plants' have been deliberately planted then we definitely need some photos please in order to help with their treatment. A great idea!

Most things seem to grow plentifully and healthily despite us on Tenerife. Of course there are plants which need special conditions e.g. orchids and books can give all this information. The key is sensitive planting for sun, shade and state of dampness. Knowing about this takes years of reading, trial and error but there must a garden society on Tenerife judging by the stunning plots outside town and village houses. Plant books and gardening books would have useful information too if specifically about sub-tropical plants and you could order these.

The botanical gardens in Puerto de la Cruz are well worth a visit as well as those at La Orotava. I'm sure there are English speaking gardeners at the former who sometimes give talks. My favourite, Sitio Litre, is also in Puerto and up the hill Risco Bello. The last two are owned by German people who speak good English. I'm sure you would receive helpful advice at any of these places.
Kew has a helpline as does Wisley.
It would be fascinating to see photos of the gardens of forum members in England and Tenerife and this might get our own helpline going.

Go on, talk to your plants Aquayle; you never know what may happen......

The nasty spikey ones need to have the brown spikes clipped off with secateurs because they are lethal - start at the bottom of the plant and work carefully upwards. If it's a large one, it will take some time. The chances are that you have more than one too

I haven't a clue what they are called and I got rid of mine when I re-did the garden. Give them a good soaking once a week in summer.

Put the kettle on over the weekend and invite me down for coffee and I'll take a look.

Don't interrupt me when I'm ignoring you!

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Dear Plant Doctors:

I've got a small canarian palm which looks healthy (leaves are green) but hasn't shown a sign of new growth since last September. Is this normal? If not, what should I do?

Dear Worried of Los Menores, I'm no expert, but it looks like one of the slow growing, not very tall plants, that eventually get a big flower in the middle.
Try not to worry

Dear worried if you are that lacking in knowledge in gardening why not concrete the garden and paint it green.
