How can I make sure I am buying a genuine Camcorder in Tenerife?

Hi .
We will be in Tenerife again on the 18th of May for a weeks hols.... and i was wondering if someone could give some advice on buying electrical goods out there. We are staying in Parque Santiago 3 so there is no shortage of electrical shops underneath us. I went into a lot of them last year but can remember seeing a lot of "Genuine Fake " I Pods and such in them so a little wary of spending €300 / €400 on a camcorder so would like to get the heads up on who sells legit stuff etc. I have a good bit of research done on the different camcorders so i'm not going shopping in the dark and have a fair idea of what i want..(Learnt the hard way). I am sure there are bargains to be got so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi pq16,
I bought a digital camera years ago in Tenerife, did my homework, took a couple of mags along with me, bought a camera, got home, bought the next months camara mag and hay presto the camera was cheaper in the uK. My advice is to stick to the reputable shops (as I did) the one I remember near you is under the shopping mall called Visanta (I think) I found them very helpful and have no problem spending money in there. When you have found something you like and before you buy, get onto the web and look up the price in your own country and if you do buy in Tenerife make sure you get everything you expect (charger, case ete) as some shops charge extra for these things. I remember going into a shop and buying a watch only to asked if I wanted to buy a battery to go into it.
I find that electrical goods are cheaper in the uk if you buy on the internet than in Tenerife, but you are on holiday and you want it NOW. Good look.

Yet again Welshsprout is right.Ask the price say you will think about it then start to walk away nine times out of ten they will come after you with a new price when they tell you this say you only looking to spend 20euro less than what they are asking play them at there own game. The shops at San Euginio are good for this as there are 3 shops all together that sell the same stuff normally the will fight for your trade.
Best of luck

We found the large electrical shop at the bottom of the stairs by the restaurant under santago III ok but prefer to buy from Carrfour as they are cheaper and "safer" you wont find a secondhand one in a box there

Visanta are a recommended shop... however I believe that Haggling won't work there as the goods are genuine and they sell at the best price they can anyway...

They also don't have PR's... there is a reason for this

Have a great holiday
check out the prices on www.komplett.ie and ebay too before you go, that ways you'll have some reference point.

I went into some of the shops looking for a mp4 player, and walked out empty handed after another customer came in saying his mp3 player wouldnt work and they wouldnt offer a refund.

Make sure they operate the device there in front of you - Pretend your thick and how does the zoom work etc.. If they offer some excuse like the battery is not charged, then tell them to start charging it now, you can come back in an hour. dont forget to haggle over the price, and dont forget that if it breaks while your home your warranty probably isnt worth the paper its printed on.

I would add that these camcorders that take memory cards, I am not sure about......

Best of luck, and make sure to let us know your experiences...........

Visanta are very good we've bought several electrical items from them and all problem free, Kirsty's right though they don't do haggling, the prices are usually very good and the goods are genuine.
