I'm really glad to hear this is all going to be sorted out properly, and that the bank is not being at all difficult about disputing the fraud, Ladybird. You must have had an absolutely AWFUL shock when you found out.

Are they giving any sort of explanation at all about how this could have happened, and where the weak link in their system is?

Not the same but something to think about

I'm really sorry for your troubles, hope it gets sorted out soon.

I had an experience a couple of years ago while paying a credit card bill. I had sent a cheque for £3,500.00 but when the credit card centre processed it, they put it though as £35.00. The first I knew there was a problem was when my card was declined. I called them up and they wouldn't speak to me, it had to be my husband. It was a nightmare because when the cheque was presented at my bank, they put through the correct amount of £3.5k, so I had a nightmare getting this sorted out. It took six weeks, loads of phone calls, stress, sweary words etc I ended up getting compensation from my bank but it really was not worth it for all the hassle.

My advice to everyone, when you pay your credit card, ALWAYS check that the amount paid on your statement is correct.

Bank Machine Problems

I sympathise completely with bank problems. Several years ago my aunt came here for a holiday, and we used a Banco Santander cash machine to access her pension from her Royal Bank of Scotland account. We withdrew the maximum amount allowed on one transaction each time.
When I tried the first machine, it came up with an error, and so we tried a second machine which gave us the cash as requested. When my aunt recieved her bank statement, we found that the first machine had registered a transaction, and two identical amounts had been withdrawn. When I telephoned the RBS, they basically accused us of lying, even though we could not possibly have drawn two amounts on the same day, as it would have been way over the limit. Apparently cash machines don't make mistakes!!!!!!!
I pursued the matter, and after several weeks, in a phone call to the UK, I threatened to write an article in the Tenerife News highlighting how the RBS treated pensioners' money. Strangely enough, five days later I received a letter from the RBS stating that, while they did not admit any irregularity in their machines, they would, as a "gesture of goodwill" refund the first amount.
So all ended happily in the end, but after a load of hassle.
It is possibe to win against banks, but be prepared for a load of time and trouble in trying to do so!
