I'm thinking about a career change...

Most of us go through the motions of wanting a job change. But I have been seriously considering my future for months. I have an oppourtunity to gain a promotion in my current job, which has come at the right time as I do want a bit of change but without leaving the job completely. This promotion would be on a 3 year temporary contract and after a two year review I would find out if it would be made permanent with further progression in the pipeline.

Should however the contract only last 3 years it will make my decision easier as I would go back to my regular post, which althoug I like I can not see me being there long as it stands. If the contract is made permanent I will see how much I have enjoyed the job as to whether I want to stay on and prgress even more so.

Should I not want to stay on during the 3 years I would be on it (providing i get the job in the first place) I will spend a lot of spare time working on first aid and gaining EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and paramedic training. The overall object of this to finally join the Ambulance service as an ambulance attendant/paramedic and maybe even a consultant who get to train alongside doctors.

I have never really known what I have wanted to do since leaving school, I never went to college or university as my school grades were not the best. When I was young I always wanted to join in on some emergency service. I wouldn't join the police as I work with them now and it has put me off, i'm probably never going to be fit enough to be a fireman so it comes down to this.

My dad has done this, in the RAF and worked as a nurse in the infirmary so he's happy I have taken an interest in it. Anyway, it's probably not going to interest many of you but I thought I would just share it with you all.

I'm interested. I was training when we left the Uk to come here - heading for a degree in nursing, but obviously never quite got there. My cousin is now an Health Care Assistant and has just applied to do her NVQ when the NHS decided to close down the ward she works on. Now she has to re-apply for her own job on another ward or even in another hospital. Usual NHS stuff.
Anyway, yes I'll be interested to know what you decide to do and how you get on.

I know someone who worked for Sheffield Ambulance service as a driver and she took the traning to be a Paramedic and passed and hasn't looked back ,she has a job she loves and is well paid ,and can't get enough of it .
So give it a go and I wish you all the best.

Sounds like a good opportunity, you already want more from the job you have so why not try something new, you won't have lost anything but could possibly gain so much more. Just go for it noodle - good luck

The good thing is I don't have to rush this, I can take my job as it is now and wait. I can take the promotion should I be offered it and then I get a decision to make in 2-3 years, either way it will be something that gives me more progress. I'm not setting it in stone as when you do that something goes wrong, but I like to have something to work towards. I may not like the promotion but if I can move on I know it wont have been wasted as i'll have been working towards something anyway.

Here's to the future
