How do you toughen up your fingertips for playing guitar?
Hi folks...
I need some help from you musos.
I may have to play the guitar at my school concert and I have a 12 string with quite a high action!
I took if of my stand last night for the first time in a long time, and my fingertips have gone all soft, so after 5 mins of playing it they're really painful!
Are there any tricks to toughen them up quickly, as I have about a week to get them ready and I can't practise if they hurt!
thanks in advance...

Unfortunatly 9plus is right. They will only get harder by playing. Dont play for ages intil your fingers really really hurt though.....just play for 10 mins then have a rest and then pick it up again in an hourn or so and try again. Or you could adjust the action, however would reccomend you took it to a music shop and let them do it.
I asked my son who plays lead guitar - he says - just keep doing it til they get tough - then keep doing it so they dont go soft again. no magic tricks I'm afraid.

This is a JOKE!!!!!!!! Please don't try this at home.
Kirsty maybe you need to adjust the neck. With 12 string guitars it is not uncommon for the neck to bend slightly with the tension from the strings. There is a metal bar inside the neck to counter this problem and sometimes it needs adjusting. You should be able to tell by looking straight down the fretboard from the headstock. If it is slightly curved then the neck needs adjusting. Another trick with 12 strings is to put a capo on the first fret and tune the guitar down a semitone. PM me if you need it sorted.

There another little trick but it does´t work as good as just playing. The playing thing helps you practice as well Put some very fine sand into a bag or bowl and play in the sand with your finger tips this will harden them slowly....Caution could make or hands tougher as well or snap your finger nails....Mark.
