Avoid acrylic nails! The will ruin your natural ones!
I had full acrylic nails put on for a wedding 6 months ago. They looked so good I kept them on, having them infilled every 3 weeks.
2 weeks ago they were beginning to bother me so I had them removed. What a shock My nails underneath are wrecked. They never were very strong & always flaked; now they are so bad & unsightly, I do not know if they will ever recover.
I used 4 different salons for the infills, & every salon, including one in Tenerife, assured me my own nails would not be damaged underneathnot true at all.
If my nails ever recover I have been told that having just tips, instead of full nails is fine, as the cuticle is not covered by the acrylic so nails can breathe.
Anyone considering full acrylic nails, think again. I know they look lovely, but the damage they do maybe irrepairable.
Sorry to all you nail technicians out there, but my nails are proof of the damage done. I have a friend who has had the same problem.

Good warning jaypeeps ... I fell for the whole acrylic thing a few years ago (your nails look so elegant with them) but I too ended up with problems - a fungal infection (I gather the nails actually need to "breathe" as it were and they are smothered by the acrylic).
But mine recovered fully, and I guess yours will too - nails actually grow very quickly - maybe buy some product from Boots or equivalent to "nourish" them

Thanks Doreen, how long did it take for yours to recover? I know a fungal infection can take a year to clear up, I think I have one too on one finger nail. I have a prescription to use if it is one. Will check when I go to the chiropodist next week, after all nails are nails whether on your feet or hands!
I personally think there should be some sort of warning on show in the salons; it is not fair to mislead people.

They were fine in a couple of months ... as I said, nails grow very quickly - especially in the warmth, so hopefully even a UK Summer will see you right

Firstly, I am not a nail technician so my reply is nothing to do with self promotion, but I have had acrylics on for the past 9 years without fail.. Then in February, we were working on our ne villa so it seemed pointless to carry on with the upkeep as my acrylic nails were getting wrecked due to the labour, so once they had come off I left them to their own devices. Granted, they were weak, but after about 3 weeks, my new nails have come through and I now have no need for acrylics as my nail biting habit is now cured, and my original nails are now perfect and strong

Fungal infections are due to nails not being applied correctly, so this is down to your technician 9 times out of 10 I'm afraid. Don't forget, everyone and their auntie has decided to become a nail technician in the past 5 years!!!! Luckily my technician has 15 years experience.
She can't be too happy though now I am not needing acrylics, but I still visit here for manicures.
The BEST product I have found to encourage and nail growth is the Clarins Hand and Nail Cream. It lasts forever and all I do is but a tiny dab on each nail and cuticle every night, and the growth promotion is fantastic.
I would not hesitate to have acrylics again, but please remember that the cheapest price is not always the best option in the long run.

Re: Avoid acrylic nails! The will ruin your natural ones!
Thanks for the advice, Uptowngirl. I have never had good nails of my own, unfortunately, so I think recovery will be very slow for me. I am currently using nail hardener & cuticle oil but will try the Clarins cream.
You are very lucky not to need to wear the acrylics anymore.
I have been warned that some technicians may use illegal products. Not sure how true this is, & if it is true, how do they get away with it? My regular technician gave me some cuticle oil to use, in a clear bottle with nothing written on it, but it looked more like olive oil that had been perfumed & the brush in it was rigid! Needless to say I never used it.
I am convinced now that it is probably better for me to just have the tips, although in my opinion they do not look nearly as attractive as the full nails.
Re: Avoid acrylic nails! The will ruin your natural ones!
A product called SOLAR OIL is good, but only for 'bare nails' likke yours.
I have known nail technicians actually link sell this product to clients, which is very naughty, as the oil, once under the acrylic nail, will then cause the nail to 'lift' therefore making the need for an infill sooner rather than later.........
Seriously, before you have the tips on, try the Clarins cream, I believe it is in the region of 15 pounds. There is 2 hand creams, an age defying one and the hand and nail. In your case, initially use the hand and nail cream.
Good luck, and let me know how your getting on. Its hard for the first couple of weeks, but I was a nail biter ALL my life with terrible nails, but they really are looking well now
