I AM a qualified nail technician, had to be as I had beauty shops at one time ! Damage to the clients nail is always and only caused by the technician !! It usually happens during the filing process . Electric files should never be used, but these days its common for technicians to use them for speed. One slip and it can break through the surface of the nail plate, then when acrylic is applied a fungal infection can occur. Always go to a qualified and experienced technician, preferably one trained by 'Creative Nails', as they're the best !
Solar oil is great, it 'feeds' the nail and can be applied direct to the nail and polished in using a buffer file. Acrylic on top of solar oil makes no difference, its an excuse a poor technician will use for 'lifting'. Solar oil is good used on top of acrylic too, as it will penetrate the acrylic and feed the nail underneath. Also, acrylic nail MUST be looked after, so NO manual lifting or cleaning, just sit back and relax all day !
try eBay for Solar Oil, its a little cheaper on there, you don't need much it lasts forever !

Ah the dreaded electric files!!! Tend to be used an awful lot by the latest craze of Chinese nail technicians, whom I nowsee we have in Carrefour!!!
Cheap, fast but apparantely quite dangerous. I once went in for a repair to one of these establishments in the UK and they proceeded to try and stick a tip on my nail. It took ages for them to understand that none of my nails were tips, just acrylic and built up on a form. They couldn't really understand it!!![]()

I have had acrylic nails for 6 years and yes when you take them off, your nails will look really bad, all ridged and weak. The best advice I can give is have a break of 2-3 weeks every now and again to let your own nails recover and breathe before covering them again.
I love them and when I don't have them on, I find it really difficult to type etc as I am so used to them.

Hi jaypeeps
The same thing happen to my nails, I had acrylic nails done for christmas.
They totally wrecked my own nails, it has taken 6 months too get them looking
normal again. I would never have them done again.![]()

I will certainly keep you all informed.![]()
There are some rogues about, I probably came across a few of them when I had my infills by the sound of it.Of the 4 salons I went to 3 were all Chinese or Malaysian, the salon in Tenerife was British. Where I live in the UK I have not seen any British nail technicians yet!
I will be much more careful who I go to get just tips next time. My nails are embarrassing me at the moment, as I take pride in my appearance & my nails are letting me down.
Thank you all for the good advice

I know what you mean about embarrassment - I don't even wear my wedding rings when my nails are off as I don't want to draw attention to my hands! (not that my rings are so fab that everyone wants to see them, but you know what I mean!)

I also didnt like acrylic nails and stopped wearing them a couple of years ago and yes, my nails were really weak and kept breaking for a while afterwards.
Anyway last week I succumbed again! But, this time I have had gel nails, slightly dearer but the nail technician told me they are far better as your own nails can "breathe" under the gel. Is that right?
Has anyone else had gel nails and how did they compare to acrylic? (Didnt half hurt when I had to put each nail into the heater thingy individually for the gel to take, wasnt expecting that, so it was a shock)
They are ok so far but of course havent had the infills done yet.
absolutely NO ! gel nails are much worse ! just ask how they intend to remove them if you so desire . acrylic nails are soaked-off with acetone, gel nails HAVE to be filed down, and filing is where the damage occurs ! watch how they are applied, its like using superglue ! they are stronger, will last longer and won't lift - but that's because they are STUCK on. No professional, quality nail tech uses gel, fibreglass maybe, but nearly always acrylic.
