Super easy. Generally, you'll get a driver CD with it. You install the software, than reboot if it says it's necessary. Then plug the hard drive in to your USB port. And copy what you want onto it. Happy days!
AFAIK, some like Seagate actually have a back-up tool which will automatically back-up everything on your hard disk when you want to.

Mine simply plugs in via USB and shows up as an additional drive. Open it up like you would you C drive through My Computer and copy and paste. Really easy for anybody.

Depending on the type of info you want to store,You can always back it up to a USB flash drive. You can get them as large as 64gig.Not as large as an external drive but it fits on a keyring.Take a look here

Yes, but for a 64gig one, the gig to price ratio is a lot more than say, getting a 2.5" external drive that will fit in your pocket and hold anything up to 360 gig
I would wait a bit before getting the super-huge storage sticks. The price will come down as the max capacity increases.
