What do you think about the concept of 'Pay it forward'?

The premise of Pay It Forward is one that any person can implement in his or her own life, at any time. It begins with doing a favour for another person without any expectation of being paid back. Indeed one would request that the recipient of that favour do the same for someone else: ideally for three other people. The unconditional favours can be large or small. It doesn't have to be a big thing. It can just seem that way, depending on whom you do it for.

Good thread,,,ever since i saw the film with Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt i thought what a good idea, could it work, does it work? The concept i think could work i think we all do favours for others no matter how small and i think in some way we all recieve so i think it is already there but not on a large scale.

They say what goes around comes around so wether that is meant in mallace or in a good way i think it is interesting..I shall wait and see other peoples thoughts on this.

p.s the recieving is not the concept of it ,it is about helping others and then they help someone else.Recently i donated a laptop to a family who are a bit down on there luck at the momment and i know it would help the kids do there research and homework...I found out on friday that one of the boys gave his toy to a friend because his had broken. So is this a little case of pay it forward?

I used to always offer my car parking ticket to people as I left but a lot of them are getting cute now and you have to put your registration details in the machine before it issues a ticket......that put pay to this happening.

I am starting to get used to this now, and it is a wonderful idea, i am actually starting to think that the nice people in Tenerife may actually outweigh the nasty people, even recent events on the latest forum to surface hasn't changed my mind!
Recently i have had three instances of this, two of the people involved have asked me not to say anything but i can say that they have been life changing events for us as a family and without them we would probably have gone under and had to try and scrape the money together to return to the UK.
The third one, Scooby has offered me a sim card which i needed for free with over 20€ credit on and asked me to pay it forward.
Yesterday i was in Los cristianos at the Mercadona and a homeless guy asked if he could take my trolley back, he wanted the euro in it, he was so humble and i felt sorry for him so i gave him a fiver as well, that was my good deed for the day and i paid a little back.
Its weird but recently things have been going good and for the first time in over three years in Tenerife i am almost positive about the place despite the recently surfaced narrow minded bigots that are trying to drive me down!
Watch out Tenerife for once i have a positive outlook!

Pay it Forward sounds good. Sort of like Karma. It's all about being positive and helpful to the best of our ability so that we can spread the good in the world rather than re-enforce the negative aspects. No one has it easy no matter who they are and Pay if Forward always makes me believe in humanity even if I don't need it so much. There is something special about a stranger or just an acquaintance reaching out and accepting you and your circumstances to the point they want to help. Nothing else makes you feel quite so connected to human kind.

Your post reminded me that a similar movement began in 1995 - The Random Acts of Kindness™ Foundation inspires people to practice kindness and to “pass it on” to others. They provide free educational and community ideas, guidance, and other resources to kindness participants through their website. Acts of Kindness

One of my favourite storybook characters is from 'The Water Babies' by Charles Kingsley - she is Mrs Do As You Would Be Done By. I always liked her better than the other fairy in the story - Mrs Be Done By As You Did, as I feel that she is more positive and encouraging people to think about other people's welfare as if it were their own, rather than acting out of spite or returning malice with malice.

In pure personal development terms it's known as "sowing & reaping". Read Covey, Canfield, Hopkins et al and they all make it a major topic. What you sow so shall you reap. Recently the hit TV show "My Name Is Earl" has, very humorously, promoted the same theory - albeit in the name of Karma!

Helping people, especially friends, is not an option. You just do it without question or desire for reward!

What do you think about the concept of 'pay it forward?'

Surely decent people do this anyway and expect nothing back?

When traumatised by the buying process in Tenerife, many forum members helped and also a man in Spain, an ex-lawyer, who had a website appropriate to a particular problem. He asked no pay but for a donation to the Franciscans when I next visited a church or priory. Glad to say I did this locally and in the friary in Puerto de la Cruz. As forum members it is usual to pass our knowledge of Tenerife on to new members and it is likely that they, in their turn, will give help to later newbies.
