Do you have to have qualifications to work in accountancy?

Does anyone know how long you have to train/study to be an accountant? And if you have a crimenal [sp??] record will it be harder to find a job?

Do you want to be an accountant in the UK or Spain or somewhere else?

This site
contains information geared towards people who wish to move to and work in the UK in the accountancy sector.

Quote:
ACA, CIMA, and ACCA are the three major UK qualifications.

An ACA is an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
An ACCA will have passed the professional examinations required for membership of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
CIMA have passed the professional examinations required for membership of the qualified accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants respectively
There is also the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAAT) which enables people to study whilst working. It offers practical training and qualifications in key accounting tasks and can lead towards Chartered Accountancy
There are plenty of companies who will take somebody on who is on their way towards attaining such a qualification. It is probably a good idea to do this as the more experience you have when it comes to your first full accountancy role - the better.

You also need to consider which area you want to work in - Public Sector, Private Sector, Banking etc.
Also what type of job as there is a huge variation.

With the right qualifications and experience you can earn anything from £12,000 to £1million+ in this field. There are jobs in Londons square mile, the Channel Islands, offshore jurisdictions around the world including the Caribbean, Dubai, Singapore, Vanuatu - pretty much anywhere where there is Enlgish speaking businesses there is accountancy work.
But you would probably start a little closer to home and much closer to the £12,000 salaries than the £1million+!

I guess it depends on the crime, if you were the mastermind behind a massive bank fraud then that will probably dampen any future employers enthusiasm to letting you handle their accounts.

Also depends on the time since the crime was committed as they may be spent in which case there is no requirement to inform an employer.
I would think if you apply to be a trainee accounting clerk it is unlikely that you will be police checked by a company - it costs money for one thing.

Whether you inform them or not is up to you - if it was a job with somebody I know or had worked with previously then I would let them know what had happened. Otherwise I don't think I would tell them as most will simply use that as an excuse to reject your application.

One thing most employers in the financial sector will check is your credit history so try and maintain a good credit file. For some jobs a credit check is a mandatory requirement.

Apply to Lehman Brothers, oh I forgot that was run by a bunch of crooks alledgedly. Failing that you could always try HBOS or Lloyds TSB.

Could also try for a job as the Chancellor after the government stole all the shares at Northern Rock
