He's not on the forum but Ray who works for me in Scotch Corner fought in the Falklands, he was a Sergeant Major and served for 22 years.

I also had a friend whose husband was in 2 para in the faulklands war......it was a very difficult time but thankfully he came back in one piece, thats not to say that it didn't effect him. My heart goes out to anyone who has a family member in the army who is sent into a battle zone...thankfully I have never had to experience that feeling.

I was two years too young to go at the time, my Brother in Law was down there, and it severely changed him. I went down there after the war in 1984, as did most new recruits at the time.

One of the exercises we did, was to march the route 45 Commando took, from Port San Carlos, to Port Stanley. The exersice took us 4 days in (peace) time, around 125km's, up hill and down dale all the way. A journey which took 45 commando 2 weeks to complete under battle conditions.

We visited some of the conflict areas, most of which had not been cleared of the debris from the day it happened, which was quite eery.

Just seems funny to think now that most of the poor islanders down there now are quite oil rich

I was in the army at the time but didnt go. Had a few mates who went with 29 commando and some from 4th regiment.Had one mate who was on the sheffield when it got hit. He gets flashbacks still. He was there as air defence and feels guilty that they couldnt hit all of the planes.
After it was over one of my bty went there to work in the cook house. He ended up married to an islander and is still there today. Shame the lads out in afghanistan dont get the heroes welcome the falklands boys did. In the paper this week that one lad home on sick leave was refused a room in a hotel as they dont like service personnel. He just wanted to visit a mate in hospital who had also been wounded. Really makes my blood boil to be honest. Next timed the army stand in for the fire brigade it would be nice to see that buissness burn, they would want the army soon enough then....
