The safety record of that airline is so poor they are not allowed to fly over European airspace The poor people who have no choice but to use cowboys like these its shocking. My son is in the air as we speak, between Australia and Singapore. I will be so glad when he is back here!!

Faulty Flaps Caused Madrid Crash

A plane which crashed at Madrid airport last month, killing 154 people, had faulty wing flaps and a warning system that failed to sound, an initial report into the crash has found.

An automated voice warned "stall, stall, stall" in the cockpit of Spanair flight JK5022 to Las Palmas moments before it climbed 40 feet into the air and then flopped back down onto its tail and careered off the runway.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-82, loaded with 10,130 litres of fuel, shot across half a mile of scrub before falling into a small ravine and bursting into flames, said the report, published on the Transport Ministry's website.

Only 18 passengers survived the accident, Spain's worst aviation disaster since 1983.

Data from the plane's black box flight recorder showed that the flaps were flat and not pointed down to give the plane lift. The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Commission adds that slats at the front of the wing not deployed, either.

Despite this, the take-off warning system failed to ring, which might have given pilots time to abort the takeoff. It added that both engines appeared to be working normally.

The 12-page report said investigators would conduct exhaustive tests on wreckage recovered from the crash while they continue analysing flight data.

The MD-82 jet arrived in Madrid's Barajas airport from Barcelona at 10:13 a.m. and was preparing to fly on to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands when the pilots informed the flight tower of a problem and taxied back to hangar.

The plane returned to the terminal where technicians found overheating in a gauge and removed a fuse from the circuit.

After temperature returned to normal the plane taxied back to the runway, before the attempted take off at 14:23.

Spanair mechanics face crash quiz

A preliminary report focused on the plane's wing flaps and warning system
The judge investigating the Madrid plane crash that killed 154 people in August is to question three mechanics on suspicion of manslaughter.

The two mechanics who checked the plane before take-off and Spanair's head of maintenance at Barajas will appear before the judge, court officials said.

The Spanish passenger jet crashed and burst into flames shortly after take-off at Madrid's Barajas airport.

An investigation said the plane's wing flaps had been set incorrectly.

Human error

Investigators say the two mechanics had deactivated a faulty temperature gauge, but failed to spot a problem with the aircraft's take-off warning system, which was operating on the same electronic relay.

Less than half an hour later, Spanair flight 5022 crashed after take-off, killing all but 18 passengers on board.

Investigators say the wing flaps - which should have provided lift - had not been deployed, and that the warning system failed to sound in the cockpit.

The suspicion, set out in court documents, is that the mechanics failed to pick up on a broader electrical fault, which would prove fatal, says the BBC's Steven Kingstone in Madrid.

The three men have formally been cited for the manslaughter of 154 people and for the injuries suffered by 18 survivors.

They are expected to give evidence in court next month.

Separately, the judge has set up a second investigation committee - consisting of pilots, flight engineers and mechanics - to run in parallel with an ongoing government-led inquiry.

The loss-making Spanish airline is owned by Scandinavia's SAS.

Earlier this month, it announced it would shed more than 1,000 jobs and cut capacity by 25%.

Spanair lost 515 million Swedish crowns ($71.72m; £39.69m) in the first half of 2008.

So the two things were connected then................
As I said at the start, I dont like co-incidences, as they quite often arent.
Heads will roll, and quite rightly.
