Beijing Olympics 2008 - Propoganda?

I can't say the Chinese people don't deserve it. But to give a Police State government the opportunity to swank it, in a place where the air quality is six times worse than London is just ridiculous.

How naive must the Olympic Committee be?

There was some serious behind the scenes bribery going on (in my opinion) for the games to be given to China... it makes no sense at all!

I love the Olympics, but can't even bring myself to get excited about them this time, or even watch the opening ceremony... I only hope it goes well.

Opening ceremony worth a look...

Can't say I agree with the politics and the hype either but even if you don't watch anything else, watch the highlights of the opening ceremony. The lighting of the Olympic torch was breathtaking.

Should have had a massive public execution with nice lasers.
It would have painted a nice picture of the last sixty years in that beautiful country.

I know it's hard to remove the politics from Olympics but for the next 16 - oops now 15 days we will be supporting Team GB with gusto. We even got our dog wearing a Union Jack bandana for the Opening Ceremony yesterday!

Go Team GB!

Countries generally pay to be the hosting country. It's called bidding, not bribery.
What makes China so bad? It's what western leaders want you to think. Because China is an economical threat to the west. It has a very rapid growin economy, also it has the most people in the world. If Russia were to host it, there would not be so much fuzz. While Russians are killing their own countrymen in the Georgia as we speak. People get poisoned with Polonunium. There's Chechnya. There's Putin, his mini-me (Dmitry Medvedev), and then Putin again. Plus human rights in Russia are to be taken with a pinch of salt, sugar or pepper, what you prefer.

The fact that China opens it's doors for all the world to see what they're about is a step in the right direction. You can't introduce freedom of speech/press over night. That would make for a disaster. This is a process that takes time.

And as for Tibet.
China is big. 9,598,086 km² big to be precise. It is not possible to to let Tibet become independent without many more parts of the country wanting the same thing. What would happen then to their flowering economy? Exactly. Everybody would be sad because of the poor starving children in China. But hey, that's ok, because the most important thing is that Tibet gets it's independence.

I seem to remember the Moscow Olympics being boycotted by many countries, so you're wrong there.

The Georgians (independent since 1991) started the killing in South Ossetia, so you've cocked that one up too.

If China is an an economical threat to the west, how come so many western businesses prosper so much from selling Chinese imports?

China are the only ones who claim Tibet is part of Chinese territory. The Tibetan quality of life is no better under Chinese rule (as promised by the Chinese).

They seem to want the best of both worlds in China. The similarity with Russia is obvious, neither of them fair very well in my eyes.
