My laptop gets hot and switches itself off. Is this normal?

when it has been on for 3 to 4 hrs it gets very hot underneath and then it switches itself off.is this normal because its my first computer.

Processor intensive operations (and background junk programs) will mean more heat.

Try going into the setup and changing the performance and fan operations - sometimes the fan operation comes under 'noise' i.e. the more noise, the more the fan is cooling the processor which may be simply what is required.

Does it overheat on your lap, bed, sofa etc? Locate where the fan is underneath & ensure its always clear, if its blocked by your thigh or anything else, the warm air can't escape & you'll overheat/switch off.

If that is the issue, try sitting the laptop on a hardback book in future.

My laptop becomes unbearably hot sometimes and i have it on a board, but then again it is old so i just put it down to that.
