Assisted suicide : Do Tenerife Forum members agree with it?

Today in the high courts Debbie Purdy is arguing for the right to end her life of pain with some dignity, without her partner suffering any legal consequences, assisting suicide carries a maximum prison term of 14 years. So tell me people, where do you stand, your partner screaming in agony that no painkiller short of morphine wont take away, the loss of bladder control, no longer able to walk no longer able to use arms or hands, and only the prospect of further pain and further disability, do you help them carry out their wish or do you let them suffer?

Heartbreaking either way. On one hand I could not watch my loved one suffer and on the other what do the rest of your family do if you are sent to prison. Assisted suicide should be legalised for all people suffering pain and loss of dignity. After all we dont let our animals suffer so why should we have to stand by and let it happen to our loved ones!!

This is a hard one to answer, i would never want to loose my husband and it must be the worst thing to be asked to do, I think id be selfish and want to keep him regardless, then on the other hand i wouldnt want to see him suffer. oh i just pray and hope this scenario never happens to me, i just wouldnt like to be there.

Suicide, we are told is a sin, in most countries is is also against the law. In some countries is punishable by death. Assisted suicide is regarded as murder in most countries. In the case of animals, however, if you allow you pet to suffer by not putting it down you can be prosecuted for cruelty double standards or what!!! If it were me I would want the release from pain.

we have talked about this many a time, what with my dad etc.

i for one am in total agreement that if someone wishes to die, they should be allowed to with DIGNITY and have no legal consequences hindering them re their other halves.

we as a human race put other animals down, once they are suffering. .

a horse will be put down once its leg is broken !!
dogs will be put down if they even had a bad temperament and can not be homed !!
the list goes on, but when it comes to a human, this is when it all gets to legal in my opinion,

why should it be that we have no right to decide how we end our life? once we get to a stage of total dependency, on either other humans or machines. i find it totally disgusting that in this day and age we make our fellow human beings live a life that has no bearing whatsoever.

its not right for the person whom is in pain and its not right for their relatives who have to sit and watch the one they love go through the end of their days in pain.

i understand that most of us would not want to be in either position, but the question you have to ask yourself is if you love them is which or what is best for them and not you.

well thats my point of view and my rant over and done with

If my hubby was ever in that position, with no chance of recovery and no quality of life, i would definitely assist him to end his life.....it would break my heart to do so, but I wouldn't be able to watch him suffer. I hope that he would do the same for me. I only wish we could have done it for my father years ago.....it was terrible to watch him waste away slowly as he did.

We do it for our beloved pets because they have no quality of life or are in terrible pain, so why not for our nearest and dearest.

I believe that to legalise assisted suicide would be a good thing, people would would be able to choose wether to live in pain or die a dignified death. there would have to be very stringent guide lines laid down and the laws on the subject made very clear otherwise it could be misused by a few unscrupulous members of the human race.

What about the argument that if you legislate for this you switch the medical profession from attempting to find cures to accepting certain illnesses are deemed as a reason for euthenasia.
In the past 100 years cures for what was thought incurable have been found.
I have the same as this woman and let me tell you I think ANY type of life is better than no life.
What if you kill me off and one week later the cure is found? how do you bring me back?
When I first started to ponder this I was ayes, now I am a definite NO

I would commit suicide as long as I am able to do so to spare my beloved ones the decision to kill me.

No Rainer its not an option, I suffer increasing pain and disability, I feel that even now there are times when I think enough is enough, but it is the pain clouding my judgement, the answer is better care , a society is judged on many things, one of which is how it cares for its sick,
