Help! My son has spilt hot chocolate on his laptop!

My son has spilt hot choc on his laptop. He did it last night and did not tell me I only found out when I went to use it this afternoon. At first the keyboard played up, typing 3 or four letter everytime a key was pressed, now it won't even start up, just stays on the welcome viao page and make a bad noise What should I do ( apart from kill him or buy a new one ) ?

Well, it might be ruined, if you have switched it on while components were still wet inside. If you had mentioned this at the time it happened, I would have suggested opening it up, completely rinsing the whole of the insides so that there was no choccy drink left on, then letting it COMPLETELY DRY OUT for days... then putting it back together.

As you have had it on since, it might have burnt out some components due to the liquid being on it... and the sugar in the choccy drink is REALLY bad for electrical stuff. Take it to a shop and get it looked at ASAP.

Contact your household insurance and get a new one.

I would think very seriously about switching it back on before all the choccy drink is cleaned off it... it still may overheat otherwise...

My cat weed on my laptop a few months ago. We were out of the house and the bloke had left it switched on, so it was ruined by the time we got home Luckily it was an old thing my mum had let us have and wasn't worth much. It was only used for a bit of surfing anyway.... however now it means the bloke has to fight me for this PC

Coffee and bread crumbs are a killer too on the keyboard

I purchased a small USB keyboard from Maplin in the UK, you will find most PC shops do them. The problem here is that the keyboard may not be seen by the USB port if the computer is in an unfit state (or needs bios access).

I eventually killed my Laptop by bashing it into a door to the bogs at Rownams services on the M3

I now run the hard disc from it via the desktop PC.

btw, the Sony Vaio range is actually quite well supported for parts and spares so you should be able to get a new keyboard direct.

See the support page for details. I think there is also a tutorial on how to flip out the keyboard too.
