Has anyone ever had any strange pregnancy cravings? (Pica)

For the past couple of weeks I have been craving... ICE! It's bloody freezing outside but all I want is crushed ice! The frosting off the inside of freezers would be perfect but no, it's not that bad a craving that I have to resort to that!

I thought I was going mad until I did a search on Google that revealed loads of pregnant women have had a craving for ice and apparently it's linked to iron deficiency anemia! It even has it's own name which is pagophagia.

They say you learn something new everyday! Lol

The weird thing is that the craving of ice that myself and other pregnant women have had, isn't really for the cubes but more for crushed ice

which is really odd, don't you think? I must be getting through nearly half a 2kg bag of ice a day! I have to put the bag of ice in a carrier bag, wrap a towel round it and then beat it to death on the patio slabs so it's all crushed. I have no idea what the neighbours must think!!!

My craving was tomatoes on toast. I put on just under 1 stone and Harry weighed nearly 8lb. I was back in my jeans the next day. However the down side I have a child that won't eat anything red, that rules out pizza, beans, sphag bol, tom sauce, you name it if it is tomato based he won't eat it.

I craved ice cream... luckily I have my own machine, so the bloke didn't have to go out and buy it for me in the middle of the night!!! Good job really, as he doesn't drive and we live in the middle of nowhere... or did at the time

There are things I crave. Whether they´re to do with pregnancy....

Hey Natz I craved ice for my first child ate it like it was ice cream.. she now eats it like its ice cream!!!!!!

My second was mushrooms, had them for every meal, including breakfast!!!

i also had this craving with both my children 1 a boy and the other a girl i would fill big tubs of water and freeze them then smash them into bits with a rolling pin i was like a mad woman! i would even take it to bed with me my husband used to go mad and while i was in labour my friends mum bought in ice pops in a flask but it was pure ice i wanted this is a strange craving i don`t know anyone else who`s had it but my midwife did tell me it was common at least it`s not chocolate!

Yep, the one good thing is that I won't put on any weight with craving ice!

Isn't it weird that you prefer it plain and not flavoured too, none of my friends can understand it at all!
