British Navy: Three Meals A Day For £1.80

Got this on Sky News this morning.

What could you buy for the princely sum of £1.80? Three bars of chocolate, maybe half a pint of beer?

Well £1.80 is precisely how much Royal Navy chefs have in their daily budget for the breakfast, lunch and dinner of each serviceman and woman onboard their warships.

"It's tough work knocking out decent food on a budget like that, even Jamie Oliver would struggle," a source told Sky News Online.

"Police dogs get fed about four quids' worth of food each day, so that puts it all in perspective."

Makes me angry, especially when you read on and see what the Americans spend on their troops. At least they are appreciated by their masters.

And our thieving M.P's want another £23,000 a year on top of what they are overpaid already! That amounts to about £63 a day! Maybe they might all volunteer for a tour of duty in Afghanistan....... but that would be Fantasy Island wouldn't it.

Thats why you don't see any fat sailors, they would'nt be able to get through those narrow doorways on ship. Even worse those small hatches on subs.

That is doable. It just means they buy raw ingredients rather than pre packed processed stuff. The down side of that is if your cooks are rubbish then the fodder ain't so good.....I should know I work on a ship

Thats normal in the uk, i use to work for a big catering company in the uk and i had a budget of 1pound 40 pence per child per day for 3 meals and that was in a private school, in the state schools it was even less. Remember though the food to buy is much cheaper as its bought in bulk so the money goes alot further.

1.80 pounds is about $3.58 US.... I could certainly make do on that much per dayif I had to. I like to "live a little" and not always watch my food budget, but $3.58 would certainly be doable
