Helping children stay secure whilst using social networking sites.

Just seen an item on the news about the fact that many children are not keeping sensitive information about themselves private. The report suggested that lots of young people are very knowing about using the sites like BEBO and their parents are not, and that the youngsters are making their information available to the world instead of just to their own friends.

In my role as headteacher in my last school, I would have asked parents to 'please help your children to stay safe by asking them to show you how they have their information stored, and advising them to follow all the safety guidelines.'

Sadly most kids do ignore the warning that are already in place.
For example, if you open up a IM in (windows) messenger it says something like'

"Never give out you address, credit card details or personal information."

With msn you can save all transcripts of previous conversations. Go to TOOLS/OPTIONS/MESSAGES & tick message history. Just be warned though your kids have to grow up, if you're like me & have a teenage daughter you have to step back & give them the space they need.

The best security setting is an open & honest relationship where you treat your children as adults & accept they will have boyfriends and 'experiment' rather than kicking up a fuss so they can't confide in you.

Licinius, I have a teenage daughter & she is a total nitemare already at only 13!!!
She is on MSN every evening & has something about herself on Bebo.

We have all of our computers in the living room, so we can see exactly what she is up to, so there´s no way she would visit porn sites & such with the whole family in the room with her.

We don´t question her like as you said, you have to give them their own space otherwise they retaliate

is that free ? K9 cost nothing and is very simple to use and you can just have it to monitor what sites have been view. No parent should be without something like this if their child has a computer

The concerns I expressed in the OP were for children to be helped to learn how to be careful with their personal details and to protect their own privacy. The original report indicated that many parents need to know more about the sites their children use, to understand how to help them keep safe, & was not necessarily suggesting that parents should be invading the children's privacy themselves. Tricky work being a parent You do the groundwork - like with rules for crossing the road - and then you have to hope that the youngsters will use the rules wisely!

I'm not sure that it's free, however it's supposed to be a good package.

The problem with some of those sites is some only block the web address, e.g. msn.com but not the ip, e.g. 207.68.172.246

So in theory the child only has to ping msn get the ip and type that into the address bar instead.

If you did want to keep an eye on your kids i would block those sites in internet options and install an invisible keylogger that notes down every key that is pressed.
