This is going to sound really stupid, BUT being a Mac person all my life, I do actually have a PC/windows laptop. This is normally used for the sole purpose of re-setting printers with a control count chip system.
The problem is I need to do a total clean install. Wiping everything off..totally! I have tried to install an update of the OP and its gone haywire. I don't understand it and short of throwing it in the pool a clean install will suit me better! I have lost my temper, hit it, been nice to it, even whispered in its ear that PC is better....but no. its not playing ball.
It was second hand to me so a clean install and a new beginning....but what the hell do I do??
Any help will be appreciated.

First question... do you have to original install CD and Serial for the Windows OS you want to clean install?
Second question... do you have all the drivers for all the components on a CD ready for the reinstall?
I am currently in the process of doing my kid's PC as I type

You havn't said what Windows Operating System you want to install, but I assume it is Windows XP.
Here is a quick and dirty explanation off the top of my head.
The simplest way is first to insert the Windows CD, if the BIOS is set to boot from the CD drive the Disc will automatically be read and you will get an option to "press any key to boot from cd" Do this. If not you will need to press F8 as the machine starts which will bring up the BIOS boot menu and you can select the CD drive as the boot device.
It will go through a file loading sequence, basically follow the prompts which are pretty self explanatory, but you are best choosing the options for a clean installation and formatting with NTFS.
Once the Windows installation starts, you will be asked to enter the product key, then specify language and keyboard layout. Normally for the UK this is English UK for both settings. Then you get asked to set the time zone, and you may get asked to specify network settings, you normally accept "typical" TCP/IP.
Once this is completed Windows will reboot and you go through a welcome sequence, where you get asked for a username and to select the method of connecting to the Internet, select "Skip" here.
Windows will then finish loading. Now depending on how old the PC is you will have to install some or all of the following drivers. Graphics, Audio, Network, Modem, and maybe others depending on what other devices you have installed.
Also then as required, DVD player software, CD/DVD writer software, Anti-virus and anti Spyware (AVG 7.5 Free and Lavasoft Adaware 2007) are both good and free.
Hope this helps and please PM me if you get stuck on anything specific.

But you can't do Teddy's suggestion if you don't have the installation CD....

Hello the other way would also be on boot up mode press F8 then choose safe made with command prompt or let boot normally call dos prompt screen and write C:\FDISK......If this doesnt work on your system then goto the hard drive in my computer right click scroll down to FORMAT it will ask which one (if you have a partition) and just click go...Good luck any probs pm me. PSS.I WOULD ALWAYS USE FAT32 NOT NTFS file structure my opinion.

I use spysweeper for spyware. How does the Lavasoft free programme compare to this?

Personally I prefer Adaware to Spysweeper, party because I don't think it is so resource hungry and partly because I think it does a better overall job of detecting more types of Spyware & Adware.
However as with many of these products, it's often down to personal experience & preference. If you find something that does a good job for you and you are happy with it, stick with it.

I prefer Avast. It's boot scan makes sure nothing gets through too. After installing avast, it found problems on my old PC that even McAfee didn't find! So I stopped paying for McAfee.
