After 26 years in our house we've finally decided to have a grand sort out and to get rid of loads of 'stuff'. I've tried so many times in the past to get rid of things but end up sitting on the floor looking at photos and old memorabilia and getting all sentimental. Being a teacher hasn't helped: we keep everything in case it comes in useful for a project etc. My husband squirrels bits of DIY parafanalia so the shed and garage are chocca too!!
A few years ago my daughter and I watched the programme 'Housedoctor'. One sunny morning we moved most of the contents of the spare room onto the patio for a grand 'sort-out'. By 1:00p.m. we were ready for lunch. By 2:00p.m. it was clouding over and the decisions seemed impossible; we put everything back.
I've tried charities, boot fairs and am slowly mastering Ebay (NOT tights!!!!!) but ultimately keep far too much. Is anyone else the same??? Am I a lost cause?

I love having a good clear out especially having 4 kids who keep leaving home and half their stuff stays here, then they come back and bring a load more stuff with them, and when they leave again - they leave another load of stuff behind. It's great to chuck it all out and have some space!!! I lost alot of sentimental "junk" years ago, which I might still have if this incident hadn't happened. Then when our parents died, and their home had to be cleared and sold, my brothers and I had to part with alot of stuff that we had grown up with which was very hard to do, but it was all "stuff" that we just didn't want in our own homes. Since then I have been alot better about getting rid of things that just aren't needed any more. I can't get rid of old photos though - and I have thousands!!!!

Constipation is defined medically as fewer than three stools per week and severe constipation as less than one stool per week.
Constipation usually is caused by the slow movement of stool through the colon.
There are many causes of constipation including medications, poor bowel habits, low fiber diets, abuse of laxatives, hormonal disorders, and diseases primarily of other parts of the body that also affect the colon.
The two disorders limited to the colon that cause constipation are colonic inertia and pelvic floor dysfunction.
Medical evaluation for the cause of constipation should be done when constipation is of sudden onset, severe, worsening, associated with other worrisome symptoms such as loss of weight, or is not responding to simple, safe treatments.
Medical evaluation of constipation may include a history, physical examination, blood tests, abdominal x-rays, barium enema, colonic transit studies, defecography, ano-rectal motility studies, and colonic motility studies.
The goal of therapy for constipation is one bowel movement every 2 to 3 days without straining.
Treatment of constipation may include dietary fiber, non-stimulant laxatives, stimulant laxatives, enemas, suppositories, biofeedback training, and surgery.
Stimulant laxatives should be used as a last resort because of the possibility that they may permanently damage the colon and worsen constipation.
Most herbal laxatives contain stimulant-type laxatives and should be used, if at all, as a last resort..............

Very difficult isn't it - another teacher squirrel here! Moving here cured quite a lot of that tendency.
As a last resort before we moved here we had garden/garage sales rather than take it to car boot sales. And then sent all that was left to an auction house.
Papers & photographs I still have! And a friend has some bits that we couldn't bear to part with and were too heavy to bring.
When I visited her last year I was able to let go of some more stuff though, so hopefully I will be completely cured the next time I visit!

Love to clear out stuff only problem being is I let it build up to extreme sometimes first..Plan was with four days off work to gut house out completely but so far still have the worst two rooms to do and two cupboards that are crammed with stuff busyday tomorrow by the look of it
I had built up 30 years of junk in my garage in the UK but it was my junk and I knew every bit and where it was,I used to have young lads calling for bits for their motorbikes and if I did not have it I used to make it,loads of old tools and bits of steel (and a fridge full of lager)..When I had to empty the garage out to come here it broke my heart to part with it
