Which foot do you brake with when using an automatic gearbox?

what foot do you brake with when driving an automatic car? the reason i ask is that it is much more effective to use the left foot for braking.but i know the instructors tell pupils to forget the left foot and to use the right.I have always braked with my left foot and i think it is ever so much more safe and under more control to do it this way..

Tell me you are joking!!

By braking with the right foot you must remove it from the accelerator!

Braking with the left could mean that you are still accelerating as you brake. Hardly safe!

In my youth when i used to occassionally drive like a lunatic I came up with the crazy idea that i could brake with my left foot whilst keeping high revs on with my right foot.
Suffice to say it didn't work & because of the insensitivity in my "wrong" foot I nearly went through the windscreen.

Another example of "youth being wasted on the young"

i am not suggesting someone to do it that is incapable of doing it,but if you dont know when you are or are not accelerating then i am afraid you ought not to be behind the wheel, better still , not behind me

if you learn to drive with the left foot braking ,it will make you have much more control. It is a proven fact,

what if you have to brake suddenly in an emergency and your instincts dont work to take your right foot of the gas. this is a very dangerous practice and should not be done under any circumstances

what happens if you get accustomed to using the left foot to brake and then you drive a manual? The brain will be confused and in that split second of deciding which foot to use you´ll end up through the windscreen. There´s a reason instructors teach you to use the right foot, because as said before you have to take your foot off the power. In fact I may have a go at steering the wheel with my chin `because I can´!!!

if your instincts are not up to it dont do it, as for dangerous,it is much quicker in an emergency to brake with the left whilst at the same time lifting the right foot off the throttle..it will save you about 1/2 second at least.work it out and see the distance you have saved.

i am trying to be serious here. When I took my test 41 yrs ago i took it in an automatic because the test cars windscreen got smashed 20 minutes prior to my test.I had 20min to learn to brake with my left foot and use my dads auto.up to then i had driven it with right foot braking.not knowing I was supposed to use my left.I passed my test and the habit has stayed with me.I n the late 70s i think it was, they decided to try and get people to forget the left foot, but belive me its not near as being as quick to brake

Please stay away from Scotland what you are advocating is positively dangerous

The whole point of using the right foot to brake is it gets it off the accelerator
