Muhammad Ali was my all time hero in Boxing,Skill,Bravery,Inteligence,Good Looks, and a great sense of Humour,so sad to see the way his health is at present, in his prime there was no-one to equal him in my eyes, yes he did lose some fights but overall..for me anyway..he was "The Greatest"

ok, not really into boxing, but if i have to watch it, then only on heavy weight-international base..for me it´s the klitschko brothers who i consider actually as the best....

Not only all of the above but a wonderful human being. My Grandmother was a huge fan and never missed his fights. While on holiday at my Aunt's in Chicago over 30 years ago, she stood outside of his house to have her photograph taken and "The Greatest" himself came to the gates and invited her and my Aunt in for tea. They said he was very humble and a real gentleman, as well as being great fun to be with. One of his staff took photo's and delivered them to my Aunt's house a few days later - I still have them in my 'treasure box'.

Maybe the best at present but compared to Ali,sorry not in the same league,three-times World Heavyweight Champion, when the competion was very very strong, his awards speak for themselves,he was to top everything voted "The Sportsman of the Century"in 1999 by Sports Illustrated and the BBC,he was voted Boxer of the year more times in History than any other Boxer by Ring Magazine..the list goes on and on...he really was "The Greatest"

So do I remember OG getting up in the middle of the night to listen to some of his fights..The first fight with Sonny Liston when he won the Title..then the Rematch which was a farce..which I hasten to add Ali played no part in any dirty dealing's that may have gone on as far as Liston was concerned..onto 1974,this is my most cherished memory, up again to listen to American Forces Network for that memorable night when he regained the Heavyweight Title from non other than George Foreman, all the so called experts said they feared for Ali's life, they had to be kidding,Ali outlined exactly the way the Fight would go..big George did not know what it was to hear the bell to come out for the 4th Round,,he would and did enter into uncharted terrority,Ali was the consumate Matador that night,I put quite a bit of money on Ali that night..they were lining up to take my money,or that is what they thought,I honestly had supreme confidence in Ali for that Fight..I get tingles now just thinking back to those moments...arrr what Memories,I will take them to my grave, silly, but I get quietly choked up when I think of Ali now.

Ali was by far the greatest boxer ever, I have two heroes one was Elvis Presley the King of Rock n Roll and the other Mohamed Ali the King of the boxing ring, Elvis and Ali were best friends, In 1973, Elvis gave Muhammad Ali a $10,000 white robe, with the words “People’s Champion” emblazoned across the back. Ali was touched, and wore the robe on 31 March, when he fought Ken Norton for the first time. Norton broke Ali’s jaw in the second round, before winning a 12-round decision. Ali vowed never to wear the robe again, although he maintained his friendship with Elvis.

i remember something about when he had to into hostpital for apendix or something and the doctors were amazed at his body. Everything was in exactly the right place as in their text books not like us mere mortals whos organs are not always the right shape and size and position.I had never thought about it like that untill i read the article....
I`m so fast when I turn out the light I`m in bed before the room gets dark
Just started reading Sonny Liston`s biograpghy by Nick Touches its a dark book about a dark life.
Can recommend David Remnick`s biography of Ali ...King of the World. Muhammed Ali and the Rise of an American Hero.
I also think Lennox Lewis never received the full recognition of his worth.
Totally agree with you about Lennox Lewis..who is another absolute Gentleman,as far as Sonny Liston goes his was a sad life in general, ending up being controlled by the Mafia and possibly being murdered by them..with respect Peter you missed out the final part of "Float like a Butterfly Sting like a Bee"which was "Rumble Young Man Rumble..Arrrrr"which he used to say in unison with his corner man Bundini Brown, also as you probably know his wit was razor sharp, there was the time a reporter came over to his training camp when he was preparing for his fight with Liston,as Ali stepped out the ring after sparring for some rounds, the reporter having just come from Liston's camp, exclaimed, "Cassius" (as he was known then) I have just seen Sonny Liston!!..to which Ali replied in a flash.."Ain't He Ugly! He's too Ugly to be the Champ" and to finish, there was the occassion when a reporter said to Ali as he again stepped out the ring after sparring..and lets say Ali was being a little bit awkward in his response to the reporter's question's.."You are very Trucculent tonight Muhhamad" to which Ali replied,"I dont know what that means..but if it's good yeh your right"...Brilliant.
I have always liked his original ring name "The Louisville Lip"
and the quote from James Earl Jones..
Quote:
Ali in front of a camera is something to behold. A natural performer, a natural talent....Most fighters play it close to the chest, but Ali isnt afraid to show a little bit of himself. His ability to put himself in front of people led people to love him.
And what has surprised me over the years is that even past his public image, he is completely without animus. He doesn`t have a case against anyone
Despite his religion and the stance he took on the draft, despite the disgreements he had, it was never personal.
It was never "me against them".
He was always available to us. A man who can take a stand and still do that is a remarkable man.
