Just been watching an interesting debate on TV about addicts and wondered what other people's thoughts were. Addicts of alcohol, food, nicotine, gambling etc etc do they have to take responsibility for themselves or should people working in related indutries be more reponsible and refuse to sell these things to them. The dabate came about following this story of a man suing Bookies William Hill for £2m he claims he lost on bets after asking the bookmaker not to let him bet again.

In a sane country this would be laughed out of court.
Addicts are 100% responsible for their addiction. If someone is addicted to something then they do have my sympathy but only if they have the balls to admit responsibility.
If this guy wins, what do you suppose he will spend the money on?

I saw about this man on the news this morning... I could not believe that he blames the bookies..
According to the news he placed a large bet ( cannot remember exactly how much but ran into thousands) on the outcome of the 2006 Ryder Cup. Needless to say he lost... He is a grown man and should take responsibility for his own actions. The bookies are a business, I notice he did not complain when he was taking them for thousands of pounds every month... but now he has lost it all he is moaning...

IS NO-ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS TODAY?
What a load of tosh, the lawyers who are encouraging him should be disbarred.
Couldn't agree more, but what will happen if by chance this guy wins his case, will obese people be refused cakes and other fatty foods, alcoholics will be suing bars/pubs who sell them alcohol, the list is endless.

The blame culture has taken over. Any misfortune you suffer must be someone else's fault. Its like the group of obese people in the States who sued McDonalds for selling them unhealthy food. Now Im no dietician but I dont need telling that Big Mac and fries supersized is not going to help me lose weight. All individuals have a choice, addicts included, if they use this choice unwisely then, sorry in my opinion, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Its not quite as simple as is being potrayed in the press...surprise surprise.
The adict who recognising his addiction entered into a binding written agreement ( offered by the betting industry commission IIRC) with the bookmaker who offered to refuse to take anymore bets from him.
Being an addict he weakened and made another bet which the bookmaker was legally bound to refuse.
The bookmaker being greedy couldnt refuse and took the bet.
Which party is at greater fault is what the court may have to decide.

People need to take responsability for their own actions
