Can I start off by saying I do not want to see this thread used to criticise anyone on this Forum nor do I want to see examples quoted from other threads. This is not my intention in starting the thread. I would like it to be a friendly and general discussion. If it does become personal or a "name and shame" job then I will close it.
We've often seen mentioned that the written word on it's own is a flat medium and open to misinterpretation. I'm guilty occasionally of reading a post and getting my hackles up. Usually I wait a while, calm a bit then respond or ignore it. Sometimes I bite straight away. I'm sure every one of us is guilty of biting at some time and often unneccesarily. Smilies help a lot with reading the true meaning of a post.
I've been giving this a bit more thought recently and I've come to the conclusion that as the reader of a thread/post you have a choice. You can choose how to react. Responding with venom or in anger can detract from an otherwise healthy discussion and can take a thread totally off topic. Of course there will be the odd time when a strong response is needed.
Responding politely can change the whole tone of the thread and sometimes the mood on the board at a particular time.
If you think someone's post is having at dig at you would it not be better to PM that person and ask what they meant by it? I've done this with fellow Mods and they have with me, often to find that the meaning of a post has been totally taken the wrong way.
On the other hand do you think it is up to the poster to write posts in a way that leaves no doubt as to their intentions?
Just a few thoughts from me and I'd be interested to hear your views.
