Question What do you think about having to opt OUT of organ donation?

What does everyone think about the news today that if you have not opted out of being an organ donor, you could automatically become a donor ?

Tricky one this, I know if my loved ones needed corneas, heart, lungs, face (if they really wanted it ! sign disclaimer 1st tho ! ) some limbs all fine so long as I have definately popped off, Kidney, liver ( a piece ), bone marrow, blood (not too much ), ovaries have it whilst I am alive but must be anesthetised please!
Donating to someone I didn't know, I feel a bit errr, worried/strange/hope they are nice/deserve it/use it properly !!!!!, how hypocritcal is that, I am sure I would if really pushed but how bad to think a stranger could donate theirs to me or mine but I need to ponder a bit.
What do you think ????

Can't think of anything I have that anybody would want

And as for them looking after it, a stranger would probably look after it a hell of a lot better than I do

if you watched the documentry last night on a child having a heart translplant i dont think you would refuse any organs, it was a very good programe and made you realise how important doners are

At least it will be clear. If someone cares enough about NOT being a donor, then they will make a point of opting out. This will leave everyone else as donors, including those who don't mind the idea at all, but who at the moment don't think about the issue actively enough to opt in.

I think it's a good idea.

Yes I'll agree with that. I don't think I actually mind somebody having my bits after I'm dead as I won't know about it. But it isn't strong enough that I would make the decision to opt in and say yes definitely delve in and take what you want...

I think the new way is probably the right way round

Can't see that this is a problem. I carry a donor card and have done so for years. Many would do this but just don't bother to pick one up. We won't need our bits and pieces when we die so if there's anything useful why not let someone else have them?

Well put Janet. Its on the news now and it really is all down to be bothered to pick up a form and filling it in to say ok but most of us (me included) cant be bothered. So, as you say, if we were against it we would but we re not so we dont.

With the current system there are a lot of problems, with an opt out I see only one problem, namely I for one am banned from donating any blood or organs due to Meningitis, people like me would need to carry some card or other item to let people know not to even bother.
