Think some of you may find this interesting.

A couple of weeks ago our dishwasher packed up, not to worried as I pay a kitchen appliance ins, engineer (well possibly not) arrived, didnt test anything, just said it could be: heater, thermostat or main pcb control board, three days later arrived with all the parts, and proceeded to fit all three, cost of main pcb £240. heater £65 T/stat £20, now of course it doesn't cost me anything so why worry. My point is does no one have to train to have the required diagnostic skills, that we used to have it just wasn't acceptable to keep changing bits, till you found the problem.

But as he didn't work for the insurance company who were actually paying the bill, he didn't need to check what parts were needed. He knew whatever he fitted would be paid for. In other words the more new parts he fitted the more money he would make.

Good theory, but it is an insurance with British Gas, and he is a B.G. employee

Then I guess he couldn't be bothered to do a diagnostic check, he knew it would be easier to just change the parts that he knew would solve the problem. He knew he didn't have to pay for them & neither did you so you would not query what parts he was changing.

Exactly my point really, but I dont think he had the skills anyway, the only instrument he had was a "megger", not exactly suitable for checking t/stats etc.( but he did check the insulation with it)

Probably one for 9plus, but basically I think an instrument that zaps a fairly high voltage through equipment and cables to check that the insulation and earth leakage is not compromised, but I am open to correction.
