I found a major problem before with many travel insurance policies - If you were living in Ireland, say and booked a flight from London to the US, and flew from Dublin to London to catch that flight, then the flight from London to the US was not covered as you were deemed not to have commenced the trip in Ireland. Equally such policies would not cover flights taken in the country you flew to. So a flight from Tenerife to Gran Canaria or Madrid would not be covered if you resided in Ireland or the UK.
Any time taking out insurance, you really do need to
read the small print and phone if you are not sure. Even using a credit card that said it gave me full travel insurance for flights paid for using the card, did not cover me in the above scenario of a flight on from London or internal flights in Spain.
