The poor little mite. People seem to learn nothing from these incidents which sadly happen time and time again. The teenage mother hadnt seen her son since boxing day, after leaving him with her parents on Xmas Eve. It appears the toddler was taken from the arms of a 7 year old girl whilst being supervised by his 16 year old Aunt. Is anyone else feeling uncomfortable about this??

When will people learn, these dogs are killers in the wrong hands. We have always had German Shepherds, fantastic dogs, they were wonderful with the children. When the children were small we brought them up to respect the dog,we could tell when ours were out of sorts, the children did not go to them. The dogs were the most faithful creatures out,our last one died when he was 12 and we said we could never replace him and we never did,we now have a Westie who is the softest creature with my grandchildren, but we would never leave her alone with the 2 year old.No dog should be left alone with a baby its common sense.

I think that is the key - children should be brought up to respect animals!
We always had dogs when my kids were small, but they always knew the dogs were living creatures with feelings and personalities and you needed to respect that (especially the personalities).
I also wonder if it was a bad idea getting rid of dog licences. I feel maybe people should be "vetted" to ensure they are capable of relating to other animals.

Of course, so many young people, probably at a loss to know exactly what to do!

!
Dogs are easy to obtain,if everyone got one from a rescue they would get vetted, but its not the dogs fault every time its the owners, dog licences are a good idea but if its like driving licences even though its law many will not bother.Perhaps if you trained the owners and the dogs it would help.

I feel we definitely need something in this country especially with the dog breeds which some people seem to see as fashion accessories!

Children looking after children with animals that would be classified as dangerous anywhere ... is this family life for many now in the UK?

How absolutely tragic. But how can you say a dog is a "pet" when it's left in the yard? Not MY idea of how a pet should live. We now have a border collie/spaniel cross bitch, she looks soooooo cute, BUT she's terrified of kids, and is very snappy round them due to this. I make sure she gets no opportunity to bite!!! Our last dog was a labrador cross, soft as muck, but I wouldn't have left him alone with young kids either. Dogs are animals not THAT far removed from the wild, instincts to protect themselves are underlying in every breed, when will people learn?

I really don't think its the norm Janet but there will always be an element of the community who will put themselves before their children years ago when i was young parents would take the children with them to the pub and the children would sit on the step drinking pop and eating crisps whilst their parents were inside, which is worse.
