I can't believe that new advice has been released suggesting that nursery age boys should be allowed to play with toy guns and other weapons. Even worse for me is that it comes from the UK Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families. Staff should apparently resist their "natural instinct" to stop such play.

The guidance says that "role playing helps create the right conditions for boys' learning and could help them become more engaged in education in the future". How do guns help this? Even toy ones.

Way back in the 'dark ages' we used to play 'cowboys and Indians'. Is it really that much different

I think that a lot of people underestimate childrens' ability to differential between role play and reality.

But when I was a kid, cowboys and indians was always a favourite game and of course the cowboys had the guns and always won against the indians. My brother and all the males I know in that age group seem to have turned out unscarred by their childhood experiences.

I suppose though, as times have changed, so has the innocence of small boys playing with toy guns!

Maybe a difference now to when we were children is the growth of television and computer games, with plenty of "evidence" that you can be in the middle of a gun battle and emerge unscathed, or have more than one "life" and get to start over again if you get "killed".

I have never bought my son a toy gun. He has had the odd one bought for him from other people but I always waited until he had tired of it then threw it away. I never understood why lethal weapons were replicated in toy form anyway. I hate to see kids running around shooting people with toy guns, I think it looks awful. Sorry, theres the new age parent in me.
