Alcohol: Devil's brew, or life of the party?

Sorry forum, but the drugs thread got done to death, so i thought as consuming alcohol was the islands favorite pastime, we should concentrate on it.

How do you drink, and how much? I think we will all agree its for pleasure, but is it done purely socially, or because your stressed, or maybe because your lonely, or maybe because its some kinda replacement therapy, for something missing in your life, or is it purely just for party? Has it, or is it becoming a problem?

After being here now for around a year and a half, and after discovering the delights Ibiza had to bring, i find myself being around people who just drink copious amounts of alcohol, and just as i found drug addicts in Ibiza, i feel Tenerife suffers the same fate with the old, "Devils Brew". Not sure who ever quoted that phrase, but maybe some one here can enlighten me?

We brushed on alcohol and alcoholism on the drugs thread, but i would like to concentrate this on alcohol alone, and find out why it is a socially accepted drug, and why it causes so much harm to society and our very own way of life. Its almost contradictory as to how we actually accept alcohol, so we can go out and have a beer, yet it causes so many social problems...but yet we still accept it as acceptable??????

Fun....or...fury...are we stuck with the concept of alcohol for the rest of our days? How can it be so good in one instance, and then something we wish we had never done?

How many times have we each said to ourselves or partners after a real bad hangover.........never again....and we still do? Words with this drug..mean nothing!

Just thought id stir it up for new year

interesting point. A lot of things in the first post. It is sad to see how drink can take over peoples lives. I enjoy a drink and would drink more here in Germany than i would at home. Here I live in so have a drink when work is finished. If the boss is here he will sometimes take us out for a drink which is walking distance. At home I have to drive so would not drink as often.
I always have a drink free week twice a year (usually January and July) to make sure I am not dependant on it. I will still go out with friends and enjoy myself but no drink

Lst year in January/Febuary I went for just over 4 weeks without having a drink and I have to admit I felt good. I was running and going to the gym alot aswel so obviously that helped but I could definately feel a difference in energy levels and how 'rested' I felt in the mornings. BUT, I like going out for a drink, I like going out to bars and clubs so I dont think I will be stopping completely anytime soon!
I cant answer why it is more acceptable than other drugs....I dont know why.

i think drink is ok in moderation but the trouble is everyone has a different level of moderation. i myself wouldnt care if i never had another drink of alcohol but i get called miserable off my hubby. years ago when we were both younger my hubby never knew when he had had enough and he was always the last one to go home and it used to drive me crazy, but i have to admit that he is not like that now, but i do think that this has had a long term effect on me and that is why i can take it or leave it. (in moderation of course)

Thats quite scary when you look through those Janet, when I was very stressed I used to drink a lot but I have found that I now drink less and less. I bought in the same amount of wine that I would normally buy in for Christmas and I have hardly touched it.

I do like a glass of wine, but I hate the hangovers. I mix my wine with lemonade and feel so much better for it in the morning!

Yep, but as a few of us have learned, you can't say anything much against alcohol in an environment where it's seen as fun, and funny, to have drunk so much as to be a danger to oneself. Sorry, but I don't like it. I like a glass or two of wine myself, especially Cava! But that is all it is. A glass or two. I feel good, but still have control over my thoughts and actions. I just do not get what is so enjoyable about losing that.

Three members of my family are dead as a direct result of alcohol.

Two more as a direct result of smoking with myself almost the third.

Alcohol? To each their own but as far as I am concerned, you can keep it.
