What traditions do you have?

As a child I remember my mother saying to me........ Look out for the man with as many noses as there are left in the year on New Years Eve and look out for the man with all the noses. I expected to see a man walking around with noses all over his face when I was about 6

New year was a big thing in our house. My mum used to make sure everything was clean as she used to say that it would be dirty all year around. She made a big dish full of ham and peas pudding for the New Years spread with a table full of food and invited all the neighbours in.

My dad used to go out with a bottle of whisky and a piece of coal for luck and would be the first foot. It had to be someone dark to bring in the New Year and first person to enter the house. When he came in he would give everyone their first drink of the New Year.

My mum would open all the doors and windows to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the New Year in.

What New Years traditions do you have?

Giving the house a good cleaning to get rid of the past year and start fresh.

Being nice to people you don't like and promising relatives you will visit them again even though you have no intentions of doing so.

Our tradition?
My family are all grown now and I know how nice it is when you have small kids and you can spend Christmas Day as a family unit. That's what my kids and grandchildren do. But Boxing Day it's all round to Mum's (mine) and it's Christmas Day take two!
Love it!

That's why my house is such a pigsty! Rocks... get yourself round there before the 1st Jan... otherwise I'll be stuffed for another year!

As I hve worked in the hospitality business since i was 17 I have a tradition of working on New years eve. My wife also works in the evenings in a bar/restaurant and since they were old enough the kids have earned extra money there as well. So you could say it is a family tradition to work at that time. (A few times we have actually been all together working at the same place that night)

As kids my Gran used to look after us whilst 'The Parents' went out. At midnight New years Eve we had to open the front door and let in the New Year, it was freezing, the dog would escape, the central heating would waft down the street and we'd all go to bed freezing. t'riffic!!

Living in Scotland for most of the last 20 years we got into the habit of having home made steak pie with roast potatoes and vinegar peas before the bells. Then it was going around friends and neighbours with a bottle of whisky in tow
