Are you English or British and what does it mean to be so?

i watched a programme about being English a while back on the BBC i think

they did family trees on pople who said they were true English - but the programme found that people who thought they were true english were not i think one lady went as far as to say she was sueing the programme as they had found East african genes in her family line

I am very interested due to the number of poeple i now hear say "I am ashamed to be english" what does it mean to to be english?

What is a true english man when even the Queen is not a true English woman!!!!

I can't answer this, being half Welsh and half Irish, but just wanted to thank you for posting the thread. I was thinking about something similar myself.

i could open up this debate for example Scottish or British Welsh or British? in years gone by but not so i think now when ever a Scot or Welsh sports person acheived something they were british but an English sports person was English. And most would think of themselves English,Scottish,Welsh first and then British but who knows as you say a bit of reserch into our past may find we are something completly diffirent but does it matter as long as we are happy. david

Hi David

i'm just interested in what people will have to say as it is a large can of worms to open but am interested in the results really, as it brings a whole new meaning to "well I'm ashamed to be english" if one is not English.

It might make me understand a little bit more

I felt European even when I lived in England.

As for genes - the 'British' are a mixture of French, Viking, German - you name it..

I wonder why anyone would be ashamed to be English you should be proud of where you come from any country may have an element that will tarnish the countries reputation.Im proud to be Scottish you would need to ask the People saying this there reason. England Scotland Wales and Ireland have had many great inventers sports persons who have infulensed the shape off the developing world so Great Britian has a lot to be proud of. David

In a few decades we will all be European .

With modern transport and immigration ................

Like Torrenter says :the 'British' are a mixture of French, Viking, German - you name it..

Its a shame peaple are not more like the Americans putting the stars and stripes everywhere.

we should hang the euro flag everywhere on every house .

If it was not for a united Europe lots of us would not be living in Tenerife !!!.
Or daire to move .

I dident even find a euro flag in the smile list , just a scottish (or tenerife flag) and a ? Russian?
one

I tend to use the term British when describing my nationality. If asked where I come from I would say England. I don't know why I do it subconsciously.

If I were to use the term ashamed to be British it would be for the following reason. I don't like the way Britain treats some of it's citizens. I mean citizens who have paid into the system for years and are refused help when they need it. Incomers seem to get far better treatment. Notice I use the terms citizens and incomers. I don't care about anyone's ethnicity. In my mind if they live in Britain, pay there way and respect British laws and customs then they are British.

When we moved here we were responsible for looking after ourselves as we had never contributed to the Spanish SS system and rightly so. It's time Britain operated a similar policy.

Spanish people often ask " are you english?" My reply is no i am welsh. Its only the same as some of the Canarians who hate being called Spanish, they consider those to be the people from the mainland and not here.

I am sure that if we all search our family trees we would find some surprises.
