The government tells you that you are in danger from terrorists, then when you are properly scared, tells you how it is going to protect you. Hopefully you will re-elect them from gratitude.
It worked in the USA for GWB's 2nd election - so they are giving it a go in the UK in my view.
Call me Mr.Cynical, but this wasn't the strategy during the IRA activities some years ago.
Civil liberties in the UK are being eroded at an alarming rate. with cameras everywhere, airport/train station checks, ID cards and DNA checks; and all that is said to the government is "thank you for protecting us"

I don't think you are being cynical but the cctv is a good thing, come on if it helps to catch criminals what harm is there in it,these measure don't only protect us from terrorists, but from bag snatchers, pickpockets, muggers, hit and run drivers etc.I am not frightened of terrorists, but should I be if these measures were not in place?

Hypothetically (I have no idea if you have children) If cctv is unconditionally beneficial to policing, would you consider installing it throughout your home to monitor your children's behaviour without their knowledge or consent - or would you think that an invasion of their privacy?
Offtopic - but just a thought..

I do have children and if i thought something was wrong in my household I would do everything in my power to find out.I would also have no compunction whatsoever if I found one of my children had committed a crime to report them,in the hope it would straighten them out.I know this will not sit very well with some people but if more stood up and were counted the country would not be in the state it is today.Slightly off topic.

I listened to radio 4 today and there was a couple very interesting points that came out of the discussion.
The UK police already have the facility to hold suspects without charge longer than ony other EU country under normal circumstances.
We already have on the statute books the ability to declare a state of emergency when people can be held for longer periods of time without charge (infact for 2 days longer than they are currently seeking).
Sometimes I think that polititions (from both sides) come up with 'ideas' and when others point out that these ideas may not be that good or that we already have adequate measures, they find it hard to change course because of the percieved political loss of face.

Britain is the most "watched" country as well. Maybe it is viewed as an invasion of privacy but we are living in changing times. If cameras are in a public place is it really an invasion of privacy. If a shopping centre has a sign at the fromt door saying "cctv cameras in operation" can we really complain about being watchted. A report on the TV today showed how millions of pounds worth of stuff is shop lifted each year. You and I have to pay for this. If a few cameras help to keep it a bit in check I am all for it!!

My problem with the new measures is that we already have them BUT inorder to invoke them the government need to call a state of emergancy, something which they would be reluctant to do for fear of the political reprocussions.
So the proposed change in the law is a change for a political benefit and not for the safety of the country because we already have the facility to hold these people longer than they are seeking.

I believe that if you have a CC TV camera in Spain, you have to get police approval for it.
