The good Life. Have you ever considered living off the land?

Has anyone ever considered living off the land (so to speak) I mean totally self sufficiant..........Eating and growing your own produce?

No? well actually nor have I.

It just seems such hard work, but it must be lovely to eat something that you created (oh god I am not suggesting you eat your children) I can't grow things..........it just doesn't happen. In the UK the gardener grew some tomatoes in these plastic growing bags, with the little yummies, and they were amazing (tomatoes, not the yummies), that tomato smell is fabulous and you can taste the difference.

I have tried to make cakes, I have tried so hard, but it just doesn't work. The little yummies start to retch when they see me reach for the flour. I wish I could do it. I tried fairy cakes in half term, but they were vile. I think it is something to do with folding the mixture (whats that all about)?

I wish I could do these things like cook, sew and grow it must be amazing. I can't even put petrol in the car. It would be my dream to make a casserole.

Anyway are you good at cooking and growing and generally living from yourself (I can't think of the word, but you know what I mean)?

I mean not relying on someone else to do it for you.

I love using fresh produce. I do all my own home cooking, scones, biscuits cakes etc., but I can only use Icelands flour for my cooking as the Spanish flour never works for me. I even make my own homemade dog biscuits when I have time I am making some homemade veggy soup for tea tonight and I have the freezer full of fresh meat pies that I have made and quiches, so itīs easy to just pull them out as I need them.

I am in the middle of growing my own garlic which is really easy, itīs just about ready now.

I havenīt tried growing anything else of my own yet as I just donīt have the room at the minute, but if I had a nice big garden it would be full of my own fresh veg etc., I envy anyone who has a nice big garden and when we lived in Leeds, my garden was full of my own home grown produce.

Honestly I am in awe of people like you, that is truly amazing to cook something that people like to eat and stuff that tastes nice. Where did you learn how to do this and to be honest i wouldn't mind some of your quiche recipes either. Do you know about folding cake mixture? I just can't grasp it, why can't it just be mixed? How does the mixture know if it is folded or mixed?

Back here in the rain ............my Grandad has an allotment which I am a regular visitor (he needs a bit more help now). We grow everything from Runner beans to Spud's a whole variety of seasonal fruit and veg. As a relativley small family it happily feeds us all, all year round.
There really isn't any veg that can compare to all the love and tenderness that goes into the nature nurture!

I would like to start making my own clothes... I have a sewing maching gathering dust!

I'm a good cook and I can make cakes etc... but growing stuff? This is where I fall down. I have managed to get a few tomatoes on the roof terrace, however both my vines have died a death

I have lived off the land for around 3 years when my daughter was a baby...I loved the time we spend in the mud and fresh air...lots of earth bonding...people from babalone...(people that live in cities/town) would grown...what about all the germs...what a way to bring up your children.

I did and still beleive if we don't expose our children within reason to germs how do we build up their natural immune defence mechanisms.

My daughter has rarely had a sick day in her life...she still lives life at double the speed of most other teenagers I know... A psychic and astrologer once called her the pheonix re-born...

There were many like minded people in the area so we all swopped our produce.

I had neighbours that kept chickens, horses, cows, orchards for apples, oranges...and vegetables that you never see on the market...on sunday we would all take it in turns to cook for each other......there was a machanic that looked after our cars...an electrician...a banker (very important)...herbalist...a vet...

But wow is it hard work in the u.k.... when the wind is blowing 2 degrees below and you need to swop those turnips that are stuck in the hard ice for some petrol to get to work...you start to wander if it is worth it all...

Eventually swooped it all for his Highness in doors...Bless...

When we lived in Scotland we had a huge garden. I decided to grow all sorts of vegetables and fruit.

The first to be ready were the carrots. On tasting them Paul announced that they were OK but he preferred the proper ones from a tin

Actually - not strictly true

One of the problems of growing vegetables etc in Tenerife is the 'watering' (and keeping an eye out for lack of water, if you are out at work.)

The cost is another consideration. If you try to grow bananas, by the time they actually produce any fruit the watering costs work out at 200 euros per banana ... better to buy them from the shops or market

Don't interrupt me when I'm ignoring you!

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

So true.. It's been 17 months and my banana-plant-in-a-pot is still just producing 3-foot leaves every week. If I get any bananas I'm going to frame them!

I have an automatic watering system for all my plants which probably costs me a fortune if I but knew.

Home baking is easy with a Kenwood chef

I'm a great believer in 'batch cooking'. If you're going to peel spuds to make mash, you might as well to 10lb at a time and freeze the surplus. I have 2 freezers full of stuff ready to go in the microwave for any instant meal.

Recently, I made a load of 'Iceland roast potatoes' by par-boiling, dipping in the deep fat fryer for 20 seconds then freezing. Easy!
