Do any Tenerife Forum members have any tips for sounding confident on the Telephone?
I just wondered if anyone has any tips for being more confident when talking on the telephone, as I work in telesales and would like to feel more relaxed.
The important thing is that you know the product you are discussing fully. If you don't then you will never sounds confidant talking about it. Another thing is to smile as, believe it or not, it will be evident in your voice.
Be yourself ... change the script to suit your personality so you feel comfortable as if talking to a friend... if you are false the customer will pick it up and switch off ...

Be clear, precise and do not sound over confident or desperate.
Make sure you know exactly what you are talking about and keep the noise level the same, don't go from loud to quiet as this would indicate that when you are loud its pusy and quiet you do not really believe in what you are saying.
Good Luck and let your personality come through and you will do well. Just rember how would you respond to a similar call.
I would advice you to be yourself. However, this may be difficult if the company you work for insists on it's employees sticking to a rigid script. Being on the receiving end of telesales, there is nothing worse for me than to hear a complete stranger make small talk with me (supposedly to break the ice). At this point, I am ready to put the phone down! I just wish they would get to the point and be honest about why they have phoned me. So if you are instructed to break the ice with small talk make sure you really mean it or it comes over as false. There again, everyone is different and some people may respond to false small talk. Sorry to sound negative but it is a hard job you have although I am sure you will find your own way. Maybe think about telesales you have received yourself and take note of what you liked or didn't like about the conversation and dare I say "tactics". Good luck!

I agree with Benboy. People will see through smalltalk, and if anything it will alienate them. Be honest, and LISTEN. You will sound more confident because you will have won their confidence just because you've given them a chance to speak!
Agree with other posts, be yourself and adjust the script to suit you. There is nothing worse than listening to someone who is obviously reading word for word from a script, it never sounds sincere.

All good advice. Did a course once in Telesales it is not as easy as people think it is to do it well. As with most things the more you do it the confident you will become. So stick with it and be yourself. All the best in the job

Deep breathing, sit up straight and speak slowly and calmly. The pitch of your voice is important. A maturer depth gives more confidence to the listener. There is nothing more infuriating than a squeaky voice being falsely cheery and spouting American 'overlearned' phrases of persuasion.
