Help required with a computer problem.

Hello all,

I am having some problems with my pc and wondered if any of you knew what to do. I have recently switched providers from Orange to Talktalk. After a few small hiccups everything is running fine...well almost.

It seems that during installation Talktalk has installed it's own internet security program, fine by me. Problem is, my Norton anti virus and internet security are aslo still running and I can't seem to disable them. So now I have limited access to websites and no access to some at all. When I try to uninstall or disable Norton it wont allow me to.

I'm at a loss here, don't know what to do, my pc is ready to melt aswell I think. I have never known it run so slowly, again, not sure what to do. Is it worth taking it to somone to have a look at, should I upgrade something or can I do it all at home?

What version of Norton are you running? Is it 360? When I know this I'll be able to help more.

My advice is to steer clear of any Norton applications at all costs; all they seem to do is bog down your system to an unbelievable extent. Try AVG for one of the best anti-virus and spyware programs out there. Better still, it's free too.

All I know is that it's Norton internet security, it will not let me disable it or uninstall the program. I can't even configure any of it, it keeps asking for a supervisor to sign in to be able to do so. It's really annoying me as I can't even go to websites like hotmail to check my emails. I'm at work at the moment so will have to leave it til I get back.

I would second @shaduu's recommendation of AVG, at least on an XP system. I've heard a lot of bad things about Norton messing up systems.

Here's a link that may help you get rid of NAV: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can...my_system.html

Cheers for the link Torrenter, the problem i'm having is that even in add/remove programs section it will not allow me too and asks for a supervisor to sign in. It's driving me nutty as it's really conflicting with my new security system from my new provider. However, I shall try again tonight when I get home.

Will shouting and hitting the PC work

Do agree Norton is a right pain, try booting into "safe mode" you may then be able to unistall.

If not try this: In the run command type msconfig, then click start up and untick anything that says norton or symantic. reboot and see if your system runs better. when you restart click OK to save changes and disable screen message)

Thanks everyone,

I do believe the problem has now been sorted. It's a shame the network is having problems so I keep getting diconnected, but what do you expect for free broadband?

I'll be back anyway as i'm terrible with computer problems
