Do you think there is, was, or should be respect for the aged?

My calendar tells me that today is 'Respect For The Aged' day in Japan. This means at least one country believes this is proper on one day of the year. Do people think that the Aged should be revered for their accumulated wisdom which they can pass on to the less experienced? ... or should they be put down at a defined age as being born ignorant and not learned anything since , and an unnessary drain on the economy?

I agree, GL, though many societies see old age as something worthy of extra respect. Sometimes, it has taken the form of fear of witchery, as in the middle ages when old women particularly were seen (and burnt) as responsible for village ills, but at other times, old age itself is seen as venerable because of the wisdom accumulated through the years.

It's actually an interesting question because to me it's not an either/or issue. Old people can be a source of great wisdom and moderation, but they can also be a drain on a society's resources. It's for society to decide whether the resources that old people provide are actually worth the resources that they cost.

Of course, a person's view will change the older they get!

It appears to me, though, that the equation has lately been drawn differently, and that youth culture is dominant pretty much everywhere in the Western world. As such, society would seem to have decided that whatever respect old people deserve does not warrant the drain on resources that they represent.

I do think that the youngsters here in Tenerife respect the elderly, which is more than I can say for the UK. I have heard a lot of youngsters over here giving the time of day to old people. Which is lovely I think!

I say yes, they have gone through life and got this far, that in itself should be respected. Also it you are fitter and stronger than someone then you should show respect and not abuse your position.

We teach our kids and we were thought to respect our elders when we were kids, I dont see why when we get older or when our kids get older , this should change.

But....... I dont like when older people abuse the respect I give them which happens too.

This could be reversed , what about little kids who have yet to give anything to society. Older folk have paid the piper and its now their time to get paid back. Younger folk could continue to be a burden on society so maybe we should get rid of the bad ones early.(Tongue in cheek)
