Tight insurance company

After having all my stuff pinched when I was in Tenerife in June I claimed £380 from my insurance company....They have just emailed me saying they are only offering £177 How unfair is that?!

Policy doesnt cover emergency passport, driving licence, phone bill from hotel ringing police/banks etc.
It doesnt say in the policy emergency passports are not included but when I pointed that out to her she justy said they couldnt list all exclusions...
Before they send this email they sent me a letter asking me to send them details of my house insurance. When I then emailed them to ask why they needed this they said it was a mistake and they dont need it after all...... sounded to me like they were trying to pass the buck......

Why not name the insurance company...
Did you have an annual or single trip?
Did you buy it direct or from a travel agent?
Was it the cheapest on offer or an expensive one?

May help others in their decision before purchase.....

Sometimes you can claim from your house insurance, its worth checking. Travel ins people like to make sure you are not claiming from both.

You don't after accept their offer. In the past I was offered £70 in compensation from Airtours, which I found unacceptable. I wrote and explained why and told them I would take matters further if the amount was not upped. They then said £100, which I thought was fair.

Watch out on the beach!

Craig, a few years ago, my husband was robbed on the beach in Mexico. I was away making a phone call at the time and a woman approached him as he was on his own reading a book. She asked if he could take a photo of her and when he got up to do so, a guy came from behind him and swapped a black leather bumbag for the one my husband had. Once the photo was taken, they made off (with our worldly goods).

We lost cash, about £60, a credit card, a Gucci watch I had bought him for his 40th, room key, safety deposit key, golfclubs (only joking!). Within 2 hours of the theft, the robbers had bought £1200 of jewellery in the American sector. We managed to stop the credit card before they ripped us off any more.

Apart from the initial shock, it was a hig hassle, changing rooms, getting the locksmith in to drill into our safety deposit box in reception, a day at the cop shop as your insurance needs a proper police report etc etc etc.

When we got back, our TRAVEL INSURANCE co told us to claim our HOME INSURANCE as we had all risks, home and abroad. If there was anything over £200 taken, our holiday insurance would only pay out £200 regardless of value. I think the Home Ins then claimed the Travel Ins.

We were lucky and everything was replaced and we even got the money put back on the credit card. Needless to say, bumbags are not now used.

The moral of the story is, claim whoever you can, for as much as you can. For us, this is the only time we've been unlucky, but I hope this is a warning to other travellers. Trust No-one!

A lot of people show around for travel insurance based on cost alone. It's important to check the cover and ask questions if you are not sure. Get the answers backed up in writing.

I agree with Karen in not accepting their offer. It does sound like they were going to either try to pass the buck or check that you have not made a claim on the house insurance for the same things. Insurance companies have access to a database where they share claims information.

DaveRock is dead-on with that, cheapest insurance is just that - the cheapest.
The quality of cover, reputation of the company is far more important than the price.

If you want to make a complaint, write to your insurer, giving details of your complaint, and how you would like it to be resolved. If you are not satisfied with the response, make a formal complaint, using your insurer's complaints procedure.
If you are still not satisfied with the outcome of the formal complaints procedure, consider taking the complaint further.
All insurers must be covered by the rules of the financial watchdog, the Financial Services Authority (FSA). This means that if you have a complaint about an insurer, you can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
This is a free service available to policyholders who have already followed their insurer's complaints procedure. The Financial Ombudsman will try to resolve the complaint through mediation. If the dispute cannot be resolved this way, the Financial Ombudsman will begin a formal investigation. The final decision given at the end of this investigation is binding on your insurer, but if you do not agree with it, you are free to take your insurer to court.

Its all at this website Craig
Let your insurance company know you are fully aware of this procedure and intend to follow it. This gets results
