Is Sunday opening a good or bad thing in the UK, and would it be welcome in Tenerife?

Spot on OG! British workers were conned into accepting Sunday opening.

I wish shops were open here on Sundays, especially the hardware shop, oh I miss B & Q or Homebase etc. Nothing worse than being in a middle of a job, realising you are missing something and having to wait till Monday to finish. It would be great to have Tesco's choice and prices here too.
Come winter when I have to work Saturdays too I don't know what I'll do for shopping - I will definitely miss Sunday opening. Guess I'll be doomed to use the high priced touristy shops...
Oh hang on that's right, apart from water, milk and toiletries I don't actually do any shopping do I!

When I was a kid nothing opened on a Sunday. In fact where I lived most of the shops closed early on a Thursday {don't ask me why} Prior to moving here I lived just outside the M25 and everywhere opened 7 days a week, from the small Londis at the top of my road to Lakeside shopping Centre in Thurrock. It is, in my opinion great that nothing opens on a Sunday meaning a total day of rest, and I don't feel guilty lying on the beach all day or doing absolutely nothing because there is nothing else that I can do

At least you have the luxury of being able to tackle a job at weekends. Those of us who work for these companies don't. I work for Homebase.
Years ago, we were conned into Sunday working with the promise of 'double time'. We all have families so how could we refuse? In a very short space of time the Sundays became contracted and we all found ourselves compelled to work. I despise the people who come into our store on a Sunday.
So the next time any of the forum members feel compelled to nip into Homebase on a Sunday, spare a thought for the poor sods who are compelled to be there for the minimum wage.
Sorry Mods if this is way off topic. Maybe a new thread?
