Social Security Benefits in the UK. Are They Being Abused?

Can I have the member's views on State Benefits, especially regarding the following cases.
Married couples receive 1,702 pounds per month in benefits while a couple living apart receive between them 2,880.
Thousands of immigrants claiming up to 7,675pounds when the children they are claiming for live in their native countries.
A terror suspect being paid 4,000 in benefits while being investigated for a plot to commit mass murder.
Even to pensioners receiving a fuel allowance while living in Tenerife.

OK I'll try and keep this civil. Benefits are necessary for those who REALLY need them. There are a lot of people on disablement and invalidity benefits who are quite capable of working. They can get to the pub often enough and seem to manage many other normal activities.

As for single Mothers. Now before I get attacked I'm not classing them all the same. So many though deliberately get pregnant to get housing and benefits. Then they have another to get a bigger place. Why the hell should they? They have the fathers living with them but pretend that they don't so the benefits aren't stopped.

It is about time the entire benefits system was overhauled and tightened up to stop all the scrounging. This was not what the Welfare state was set up for.

IMO if you cannot afford to have kids without benefits then don't have them full stop. There are far too many people on the planet anyway and the growth rate of the world population is rocketing. Have a look at this

I'll let someone else pass on their opinions regarding benerots for terror suspects

Nothing at all. They should get more than they do already.

Benefits should only be available to those who genuinely are unable to or genuinely can't find work. Full stop!!!

As for winter fuel allowance - again - if there is a genuine need ie low income or minimal savings then yes, we should not begrudge those in need.

As for lone parents - I agree wholeheartedly with Daverock. We are now living with the 3rd generation since social security reform 1969. All too many young girls see getting pregnant as the easy option.

Fuel benefits are available to those that cliaim in the UK. IE, I would not get them as I live here, but someone who claimed in the UK and then moved here would get it - it is ****poticle the system. I know what you are saying about single mums - but!!! I do know something though Tony has paid 16 years into UK - pension 27 pounds a week, if you have never worked in uk you get about 130 quid guranteed - great!

Regarding Fuel allowance. Pensioners should get this regardless of their income or savings. My father is 80 years old and has worked from the age of 14, set up his own business at 16 until he retired. He has savings and lives off the interest but everytime something unexpected comes up he has to eat into those savings therefore not earning as much interest so his quality of living is decreasing at the same time. When my Mum died he contacted the council about his Council Tax. They gave him a 25% discount because he is on his own.Think about it, he has lost 50% of his income {my mums pension} but he still has to pay 75% of the original amount

As for housing benefits, don't even get me started. We went to the Council last year because my eldest son {nearly 21} did not want to move here with us and as there is no way on this earth that he could afford a mortgage we went to put him on the housing list.He is a clean living boy who has worked and studied to gain more qualifications in his work since leaving school. The first thing he was told was how unusual it is for someone to go into their offices who is in full time work. The second thing he was told was that they could house him in a hostel {over my dead body} as due to the fact that he had not just been released from prison or was not in a drug re-hab programme there was very little chance of him getting council accomodation. He now lives with my out-laws.

Regarding disability, don't judge people who claim disability because you can't physically see their disability. I claim disability but to look at me you would SEE nothing 'disabled about me'. I can walk, talk and hold a Voddy and Coke without any problems whatsoever, but there are many things that I have to do in every day life that cause me pain and distress and will do for the rest of my life. People who claim disability or invalidity benefits will have gone through medicals with Social Security doctors and have to continue to do so on a regular basis while continuing to claim.

Finally one of the reasons I moved from the yUK was because immigrants who had been given council housing in surrounding Boroughs to mine where being given upto 75,000 pounds towards buying their own properties if they gave up their council property. And guess what area they were moving to I asked many a councillor when they knocked at my door during local elections to give me 75,000 to move out

I knew once I got started I wouldn't be able to stop - Sorry
