What do you love or hate about our favourite enemy?
In view of THIS thread, I got to wondering about the nation that all Brits love to hate ... no, not the Germans, the French!! It's in the blood, I think ... must have been genetically modified around the time of Agincourt !
True to the "Agincourt gene", I have an innate need to hate them too, but despite myself, I just love them. I love their breads (especially croissants), and their cheeses, and their champagne, and their simple French-ness (i.e. fit in with us or bugger off to your own country), their republicanism, their secularity, and their national anthem ... the single best one in the world, in my opinion!

Come on then, love 'em or hate 'em?? And why??
I dont know why but I just cant bring myself to like them
Been to France a few times and its just not there for some reason maybe it is genetic.
It might also have something to do with having it rammed down my throat at school. Our French teacher for 3 years was a pig and a brute at that.
I did like their breakfast habits however and the rewarmed milky coffee served in a cup the size of a soup bowl mmmmmmmmmmm.
but getting them to serve a decent medium steak was a nightmare if they waved twice it across a candle that was sacrilidge (sp)
Now the Spanish especially the Canarios thats a whole different ball game.
maybe i can see them more in a neutral light, but i simly love their café au lait and croissants, their ratatouille and their cheeses....ah oui! what does my head in is their silly funny pronounciation of foreign languages ( never will i forget when that french hotel guest once asked me at reception, having a big grin on his face and his wife standing next to him " vherre is se bitch?" ...his initial question was "where is the beach")...

My uncle lives in the South of France and has done for about 20 years, so I don't really have a problem with them.

I have to agree with the french on that one... putting the words 'decent', 'medium' and 'steak' in the same sentence is a bit of an oxymoron in my opinion.

I don't have a lot of time for the French. On a visit some years ago I was mugged/robbed twice in one day, (a bit silly to go to Sacré Coeur at night). The gendarmes were aggressive and of no help at all.
As for a good, medium steak - a good vet could have had it back on it's feet in a week!!!!!!
I have known some very nice french people, unfortunately I have also known damned annoying ones.
I think all nationalities have a similar mix of nice and not nice people which is why we shouldn't generalise. Back to the topic in question, I definitely do like croissants and the french have produced some very drinkable wines...
They have contributed to a large proportion of the English language, and without the french we would never have had 'Allo 'Allo
Amelie is a lovely film well worth seeing, but why did they have to make Jean de Florette so miserable??

The tunes good I'll agree, but the words?? Bloody flag is raised! (repeat) In the countryside, do you hear The roaring of these fierce soldiers? They come right to our arms To slit the throats of our sons, our friends!
The French? Same as other nationalities as far as I'm concerned, I know some good ones and some bad ones, some great things (wine, cheese, bread) and some horrible things (horse meat, l'escargot & galois ciggies)
As much as I find then annoying I have to admire them too. In other Countries like the UK all folks do is moan. The French take to the streets and protest strongly. Good on them. I've never had time for moaning minnies but folk who take direct action get my vote.
