Question for the Techies... I want MySQL & FTP Zip backup programs...
Hi folks!
As there are a few 'puter peeps on here and there have also been a few Tenerife websites ha-cked recently... I want to get hold of a couple of programs. One that auto-backups all my different databases periodically, without me having to manually do it... and I also was a program that will zip my root directories on my server before downloading them, as it's very time consuming waiting for all the files to download unzipped.
Any ideas or recommendations folks?

kirsty these thing should be provided for by your server op-sys or server services provider as most services providers don´t allow third party programs to run on there servers.
but win.rar is a good compression zipper and windows vista bussiness premium has auto back-up facilities(i think home ultimate has them too).
failing that ubuntu ultimate has both as part of the op-sys.
don´t know if this will help you.

I have winrar already... what I'm after is a program that will zip the files on the server and download them as one package. My server won't. I've spoke to them already... mind you, it's about the only thing they won't do!!! Aparently I have to upgrade for that, but seen as I'm only using about a 10th of my space and bandwidth as the moment, I don't see why I should!!!...
Eith that, or a program that will schedule downloads via FTP and backup regularly... without me having to sit there and do it.
OG, that program's good, but it's to back up your PC or a network of them. It's not really what I'm looking for. It's also aimed more at large corporations. 999$ for a license is a bit much for my needs.

You don't mention whether it's Linux or Windows @dj. For your root backups, it may be easier if you don't bother with the zip idea, and went instead for an FTP app that will sychronise remote and local folders. That way, after the initial download, the increments are small. Google for freeware that does this.
For the DB backups, you could install a local copy of MySQL and schedule an SQL command to copy the tables romote -> local, or simply FTP the data files as above
For scheduling jobs, there's Windows scedule service, or Cron (Linux)
Just a couple of ideas to kick around..
