How many hours do you work in a week?

How many hours are you expected to work in a week?

I am not talking about the hard working mums and homemakers whose working week is never ending, I am referring to the ordinary working people who, I suppose, are known as the "bread winner"

I have never been a shirker and would never shy away from hard work, but just lately, the hours that I am expected to do is getting to me. I do have a contract which states that my working hours are 37.5 hours per week, but it is cleverly worded which reads from time to time I will be expected to work over and above these working hours.

I work over 60 hours every week and have done so for more years than I care to remember, however, I now feel that I am working too many hours and wondered what kind of hours other members worked in a week. Do you work to your contracted hours, or are you like me and expected to work whatever hours it takes to get the job done?

I would expect there to be guidelines to the hours employers are permitted to allow their employees to work, but I do not know if there is a hard and fast law on the matter. Can anyone advise on this too?

In my previous life, 70 hour weeks were normal. People thought it was a doddle ... "all those holidays", but the vacation periods were the only time we actually had free to do the research that we were required to do as a contracted part of our employment.

Our contracts as lecturers required us to work 35 hours a week, but this referred specifically only to lecturing, administrative and pastoral duties, and didn't take account of the research we did (which was actually unquantifiable). At one point the suits tried to impose new contracts that specified a 40 hour week (again with research required, but not included in the hours). The lecturers' unions threatened a work to rule ... cue many jokes in the press about how would anyone ever know ... but the threat worked because a work to rule would have meant exactly halving the hours we actually worked despite the existing contract.

Work Hours

I ran my own company for 25 years probably 100 hours a week would be average, the staff worked 38. ,,,Slightly different perspective
