How do I get the best picture quality connecting my laptop to an HD TV?

    Hi everyone.

My TV has an HDMI port and a VGA port, but my laptop only has a VGA port. My question is:

Will i get a better quality picture if i use a VGA - DVI connector, then DVI to HDMI cable, or will i get an equally good quality picture just using a VGA cable to the VGA port on the TV.

I have been told there is not yet such a thing as a VGA - HDMI cable. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi below is a link to a VGA to HDMI convertor.Or yes do VGA to VGA.

Convert VGA to HDMI with Audio (HDMI to VGA)

Thanks for your reply Scooby. If I read it correctly, unless i get a conversion box, there is no benefit in using a connection lead to change a VGA connection to a HDMI. I may as well just use VGA - VGA?

The conversion box actually changes the format to digital, and in doing so, improves the quality of the picture. Unless i get this, the signal from my laptop will not be improved by plugging it into the HDMI port in my TV instead of the VGA port.?? Is this correct. ( Sorry if i sound like a luddite, it's because i am a luddite).

    Thanks.

I'd go for VGA to VGA to start with - cables on eBay are cheap.

Then consider the resolution of your HD TV - 1280x720 or 1920x1080 verses you Laptops maximum resolution.

This page will give you some idea of converter prices should you go that route VGA+ to HDTV Converters

After the departing 747, line up and wait runway 08. Caution: VORTEX WAKE - recommended spacing 4 miles.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll go with VGA - VGA for now. One more question.... Sorry. I have a full HD 1080 TV, so i'm presuming i set my PC to it's highest screen definition setting for the best results on my TV. Would that be correct?

That will/may be under the 'VGA input' control.

Remember that it is also the Laptop resolution that needs to be considered too.
