    external hard drive hassles - there's a burning smell

    me brought my extenal hard drive to tenerife, worked no prob in the uk, never worked here in tenerife, after messing around with i detected the smell of burning coming from it, so me thinks it is kaput, question can i put the external hard drive in to a computer shop could the remove the drive and transfer the data on to another drive is this possible, heyelp hyelpme enjoying my life in tenerife coming home on friday as me off shore just now

    The burning smell was hopefully the power suppy to the hard drive, rather than the disk itself. So the answer to you question is: probably yes.

    you can eazily open external Hd and put in a computer .
    I changed my harddives already reveral times between my comp. and external HD .

    No problem just need a screwdriver.

    Yes, as poker says, it's quite easy. Just look where all the leads go on the connected one before you change it over and plug it in the same... you can plug it in in serial to your main hard drive and have it as a secondary one. I have a removable tray on mine, so I can take the HD in and out whenever I please... that way I can back up and either take it with me if I'm travelling, or in the case of the fires recently, I just stuck it in my suitcase and knew I hadn't lost everything

    THIS is what I'm talking about. You could get extra drawers and swap two or three HD's in the same tray.
