I've done this myself for the last few years and like you say saved myself a shed load of money in the process by booking direct with the hotel.
HOWEVER
Now we have the scary Euro/pound rate i've actually found it cheaper to book with Winter Sunshine Holidays or Alpha rooms this year than going direct to the Bitacora..I suspect this is because the rates were fixed a year ago and don't take into account the banana republic currency exchange rate which is likely to get even worse I suspect.
