Playa las Americas is the best beach for surfing, you get cleaner waves there as the prevailing wind is off shore.
El Medano is better for windsurfing, although you can surf there sometimes, the beach near the newly renovated Hotel at cabezo has some nice waves sometimes. but on the whole the waves are too mushy for surfing.
